Making a 6Sally6 "rig" and knead input.....

I am removing my aftermarket radio from the old hot rod. (WHY would I want to haul a radio around when I can't/don't want to hear it anyway !! )
I'm gonna use it in my new garage
So far I have discovered I can cut off the power cord to my old clock radio and use it to power the DC car radio . It reduces to 12 volts DC !!
That's the good news
Butt..........can I use a 110 AC powered sub woofer with my new radio ?( I have a sub woofer and sound bar left over from my old TV and naturally they are AC...)
Is there any way to incorporate this sound bar and sub into my future garage sound system?

Re: Making a 6Sally6 "rig" and knead input.....

Most likely you can drive that under-dog speaker with any audio output.  If it's AC powered then it has it's own apple-fryer and just needs the audio input signal from.....well, anything, I think.  Even a cell phone.I
I think!

Re: Making a 6Sally6 "rig" and knead input.....

If radio has subwoofer output cables, just connect to the subwoofer input ports.
Wire up radio to your 12-14 volt power source and plug the subwoofer into 110-120 vac outlet.
Then crank up the tunes.

If it was me I would listen to Pandora which is free on my smart phone.  Shelf the aftermarket  radio for another project down the road.

Yeah, this... Save the electro-science project for something else

I have a cheap $35.00 Bluetooth speaker in my garage which plays a steady stream of Outlaw Country from my phone...

Re: Making a 6Sally6 "rig" and knead input.....

Pick up an extra bottle of smoke in case some gets out. No I agree with Bob and Dan shouldn't be a problem. The sound out from the radio and inputs to the booster are isolated from the 12DC and 120AC. You may have a few extra wires laying around. Now if you can get your hands on an old Mustang dash, probably could make something cool.

If this forum can't fix it, it isn't broke.

Re: Making a 6Sally6 "rig" and knead input.....

The one thing I would verify is with the 120vAC power cord cut off from the radio, verify that you do have 12vDC at the output.  If this cord was hard wired into the radio, the conversion from 120vAC to 12vDC may be installed within the radio.  Just saying.

No-no-no-no....the radio is 12 volt (car radio)....
I'm planning to use a plug from a clock radio that has one of those lil boxes on it...that converts it from 110 AC to 12 DC

Re: Making a 6Sally6 "rig" and knead input.....

This is our stereo for the house.
No sub woofer connected.
Our house is primarily 12 volt dc.

12 vdc going into the box feeds the “switched/ignition” through the master switch at bottom of box and the “constant/memory.”

12V dc, You mean those light bulbs hanging from the ceiling in the background are 12 volts??

Re: Making a 6Sally6 "rig" and knead input.....

The background lights hanging from ceiling is a string of LED 120 vac lights.
The screened-in porch doesn’t have any power.
So I used a small battery (UPS/emergency exit light size) and cheap 400w inverter (overkill for load) from Wally World.
It’s plenty to illuminate the porch for outside dining and playing board games.

I describe the house as a glorified VW camper.😁

All lights in house are 12 vdc.

I added an inverter powered 120vac receptacle to living room last year.
Just to make life easier for typical small battery chargers like for phones.
12 vdc cigar lighter plugs are terrible design for reliable connections.

Most of the 12 vdc lights I have looked at are cheesy and look ugly to me….they can stay in the RV’s.
This includes most of the boat lighting and semi truck crap.
Anything that looks nice are way overpriced.

This house was done back in the 80-90’s, so lighting options are getting better.
There are 12 vdc light bulbs that use typical 120 vac bases in various sizes now on the market.
Just be aware that some lights can cause interference with TV signals…a couple of our old LED lights do that.

Re: Making a 6Sally6 "rig" and knead input.....

One problem you may encounter is the ohmage of the speakers.   Home stereo speakers used to be 8 ohms, and auto speakers 4ohms.

Many years ago I had cobbled together one of the baddest sounding low buck flea market stereo set ups you could cobble together in my 1964 Falcon.

I got the bright idea to add speakers 7 and 8 by taking and laying huge speakers across the back seat which I plugged into rca jacks I put in the back window by the 6x9s.  You could then take the speakers in and out and set them on the trunk when you parked the the field.  Yes, it was kind of cool, but it was all junk stuff, although nobody really cared with all we were "doing". Ozzy Ozbourne certainly didn't care.

Anyway, when I went to radio shack to get the speaker jacks and rca plugs, that's when the knowledgeable guy told me about the difference in ohms and how it isn't going to work.

Wound up working just fine!  I had the loudest "crap" stereo in my area!   It was a blast cruising main street!

I did mean the clock radio cord.  As long as you’re sure the output from the this cord is 12vDC, you should be good to go.
