Narrowing down the cam selection. Search criteria requires smooth idle for use with C4 automatic and 3.25 rear gears. No more than .512” lift to be able to use stock pedestal rockers and pushrods. Wide centerline for good vacuum for power brakes. Not looking for max hp, just snappy performance.
5.0 roller block
Flat top pistons
GT40 heads with appropriate springs
3x2 Holley carbs
Duraspark ignition
289 hipo exhaust manifolds
3.25:1 rear gears
C-4 automatic stock converter
Anyone else using this cam, or one very similar? From specs, seems like it should idle smooth but, of course, no printed info on this. I guess I will be giving them a call.
Why is this cam over $500???

As I have said before.......call the guys at Delta Cams talk with them about a custom grind. (I'd bet a beer...NOT Bud Lite...they can hook ya up for LESS than 500 bux) and you can tailor it just like YOU want it !

That cam is a great choice. My 351 has similar specs and it pulls great from 1500. Duration is 218I/224e. Lift is .512 and the power comes on around 2500 RPM. I cant remember the rest. I like it for the running around I do. It is great for that push getting on the freeway in 3rd gear. I no longer canyon carve. I'm too old.

I know you plan to use a roller cam.
I would think a roller cam similar to Edelbrock’s 289 Performer cam (2122) would be great for a daily driver too. This is old school technology too.
This is the camshaft I had in the 289 (.030)/ 351w heads (C9)/ C4 TCI transmission/torque converter (26 spline)/ 3.25 8” Currie Traction Lock. Topside had Performer 289/ 1406 carb/ Duraspark distributor/ Jacobs ignition system (Mileage Master). Over 20 mpg and fun driver.
I think Howard’s Cams has something close but don’t remember the part number…as a roller cam.

Seems like the 107 centerline might cause lower vacuum for power brakes?
As it turns out, Bullet Bob has the exact cam I was wanting, and we are working a deal to get his. What are the odds he would have the exact same part number/brand in his parts stash.

Yes
I already own the duraspark
Plus, the duraspark retards timing during cranking for easier hot starts. I do have pertronix on my 69 and it works flawlessly. Choice could go with either for similar overall performance, bur I prefer duraspark because I can get parts anywhere.

Yes and I think it would be just fine. I had been running the XE-266HR for a few years and it has a bit mor timing and more lift. That ran fine but gave idle issues. The 264 should have been better and probably was but I was fighting other issues and after a lot of pissing around, went back to stock.
The problem ended up being a bad (brand new) dizzy pickup module. I only found it after going back to stock cam, computer, MAF, TB, when the car behaved the same as it had been with the modifications.

I missed the 112 number somehow. I used to run thst same cam in a 302, except it was brsnded as a Ford Motorsport version of same thing.

Yeah.....the 107 centerline just means the LSA is 112* that has been advance 5*....112*-5* =107*.
More than likely the 5* has been ground into the cam.
(You COULD....advance it another 5* for MORE low end snap BUTT you need to double check exhaust valve Clarance and expect a smaller RPM range...prolly around 5200RPM or so).........
Jus say'in ........... I know that ain't what you're do'in.

I just sold a XE274 Camshaft a few days ago. Probably would of needed roller rockers for that one.

This is the one I have in mine I hope it works out good with my 4 wheel power disc,A/C and power steering . it is a 98 explorer with standard bore, i replaced with new forgd flat tops and pulled the dished explorer pistons. freshened up the the GT40p heads put some comp cam 280 lb springs, petronix distributor,
The Cam is a Howards 221275-12

I’m using a Comp Cams roller FW XE-270HR-14 in my 351W, stock rebuilt roller short block, flat top pistons, 9.5CR with Edelbrock Heads, Performer RPM manifold, 600CFM Holley (for now), MSD CD box and centrifugal distributor, long tube headers, 3.70 rear.
Cam Spec:
Lift: 0.512”
Duration 270 (In), 276 (Ex)
Lobe Separation:114
I checked the piston to valve clearance, it wasn't even close.
I’m happy with this cam, has a mild rumble at idle. Performs well, IMO.

I really appreciate all the feedback on this, guys. Looks like I am getting Bullet’s old 264 grind. Hopefully it idles fairly smooth.
