how to identify 302 28oz or 50oz balancer

Hello,
can someone point me to the right article/resource to help identify which balancer i have? I am not certain the year or age of my 302 but need to confirm if 28oz or 50oz balancer. I've read about the part numbers, but am not sure how to get to the part that helps me identify which one i have. Someone mentioned removing the starter should help make that part visible.
thanks much

Removing the starter will reveal the block casing number, above that should be a 3-digit alpha-number 'date code'.

Thanks Steve - i do not have a picture. Is it behind the pulley under the water pump? I have zero experience with this part.
BobE - thanks for the reference!

This is a 50 ounce. There are other 50 ounce versions that look different, but this is most common.

Here are my pictures of the area near the starter motor. Do these indicate 28oz or 50oz? Hope the pictures come through.

Re: how to identify 302 28oz or 50oz balancer

Since i see an OL8 on my picture, seems it would be November 8, 1970 maybe, based on the reference above sent by BobE, but still unsure if i have 28oz or 50oz which is what I'm trying to determine.

On a related note. Is this the rare ZERO BALANCE version?

Re: how to identify 302 28oz or 50oz balancer

OL8 if correct date code, would be 28.  The 50 did not exist until 1980

You have to do the entire process to upload pics. Next time be sure to scroll down to the Add button
I can only get it to work on my phone

I was able to load pictures without an issue for a long time. Then recently I installed a new Security Software Suite on my PC. After that install I as not able to upload pictures on FYI. I am using Google Chrome. I assume that security software changed a setting in Google Chrome. I went into the Settings on Chrome and tried changing every setting that I thought could inhibit picture downloads without any luck. In Chrome I went into Settings and chose Reset Settings(sets all the settings back to default) and that solved my problem with FYI picture downloading. I did have to go back into Chrome and enable the Extensions again that were turned off. I did check every other setting and they looked good to me.

wow - so private browser is what worked! Sheesh! Thanks so much for the tips. I was able to see that the casting is F1SE which is supposed to be a 1991 302 for a Thunderbird. Still have to find other casting numbers to confirm 28 or 50oz.

Can you see the counterweight on the flywheel?

Re: how to identify 302 28oz or 50oz balancer

Not having much success with locating relevant numbers anywhere on the block. Not able to see any counterweight on the flywheel. The only numbers i can see are the ones in my picture i sent when i removed the starter motor. I have 3 bolts in the crank pulley, but don't think that is the best way to confirm a 28oz. I'm probably going to take a guess at 28oz and order the transmission kit based on that. If it turns out incorrect, then the shop will have to swap out whats needed. Thanks for the help here. Obviously this would be easier if the engine was out of the car.

A 91 roller engine will be 50oz. Does it have a conversion balancer on it?
