Anybody install the Pypes 2.5" exhaust system on their 1965-1966? Or have any other recommendations for complete exhaust system?

I wouldn’t buy a nut bolt or washer from Pypes.
Absolutely horrible customer service and management .
A 2005 gt exhaust that I bought from them was so far out of spec. That it would bottom out going over the smallest of dips in the road.
Even with obvious multiple comparison photos of their exhaust pipe beside an original they insisted the pipe bends were the same.
I ended up buying o/e from Ford for a proper fit.
I went with a stock set up for my 68’s 331 which sound’s totally different than when I had a 289.
It has a nice rumble at idle, throaty on acceleration and quiet at cruise, no drone whatsoever and not having to deal with poor aftermarket fitment.

I used a Magnaflow system. I though the fitment was good and the system well engineered. I did not use their tailpipes, electing to modify a set of reproduction GT tips to fit the 2.5" system. I also engineered a rear mount for each tail pipe so I could move them up and down and left and right to perfectly hit the cutout in my GT valance.
Up front I have JBA shorty headers and built a modified X-pipe using part of the Maganflow one which came in the kit and part of a JBA one.
All told not terribly difficult on the install, price was reasonable I felt given the quality, and I love the sound and receive complements on it all the time.

Through the years, my experience is that I now prefer a 2" or 2.25" system. Less fitment issues, a little quieter and performs just fine.
Of course, you may be at a different stage in your life's experiences and you might prefer to just make more noise for the heck of it.

I have a 2.5" system with Magnaflows. The system was installed at a local Meineke shop. I have 'turn-down' exhaust tips and do not feel the system is loud inside the car.

I have a convertible.
I currently have the 2" exhaust on there now. With the the new engine I'm installing I'll have to modify the H pipe forward to connect up to the new headers. So, I figured I may as well get a whole new exhaust system. Most vendors state their system will not fit convertibles. The only vendor that has a special kit is Pypes. Looking at the Pypes website pictures the convertible setup has different bends(than coupe/fastback) and lowering spacers for the crossmember plate. And it's stainless and their bends look a lot better than what I have now.

Might be better to just make something or have it made instead. You can buy lengths of 304 stainless pipe as well as various bends from a variety of different vendors. If clearance is an issue you can always use oval pipe for low hanging sections. Based on the exhaust needing to hang lower for a convertible and what Rudi said about his experience I would not feel confident with Pypes.

I stayed with the stock exhaust system.
It’s proven to fit, not so much of a hint of drone and I value what little hearing I have left.

Just a lil FYI.......
If the engine has a healthy camshaft with a nice 'rumpity-rump' idle...an H or X pipe will mute it DOWN quite a bit.
I took mine off the last time I re-done the exhaust...when installing new headers.
My thoughts.....I paid a good bit of $$ for that performance AND snotty idle, so why would I want to hide it at idle!?
With tailpipes to the rear of the car there won't be hardly any drone while cruis'in.
It slaps a big grin on my big face every time I 'far-it-up'!

Online!
Exhaust sound and level are subjective, like what color to paint your car. Notwithstanding Lt Dan, who has several colors on his Mustang. 😁

The bends on my current exhaust look terrible. The stock setup from Scott Drake also look terrible. I can't put the car on the lift and look at those terrible bends anymore. Pypes is no longer in the running because they don't offer a kit that exits through the rear valance(only under). I'm still looking.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
