Spring and perch

1966 Mustang, Shelby dropped upper arms, modified lower arms with adjustable inner pivot Heim for camber adjustment. Adjustable strut rods. Roller perches moved outboard 1 inch.

I cut part of the coil springs and ride height is where I want it.  The bottom end of an uncut coil spring does not end following the spiral, it goes a little straighter about the last two inches and sits up against the tab on the perch. When that straight bottom end gets cut off the coil, in my case, the coil end now misses the perch tab.  Both sides ended up this way. I’ve cut a few springs for this car over the years and have never noticed this. So…

Is this normal?
Is this OK?
Is the spring going to rotate as I’m bouncing down the road?
Is the spring perch moved outward 1 inch a factor?
Is there anything I can do?
Is there anything I should do?

I can’t find any img or upload image buttons to attach a pic.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Spring and perch

I have owned ALOT of Mustangs and have messed with front springs ALOT through the years.

I have never seen a spring as you described with a straight section at the bottom. Every one has just been a truncated coil that followed the same radius as the rest of the spring.

I can see the end of the coil is slightly straighter in the top pic.  Maybe not as pronounced or as long as I described, but it’s there.

Regardless, the coil is just barely barely contacting the perch tab.  It has already torn through the perch pad there at the end. So, is this a problem I should be concerned about?

Re: Spring and perch

When you initially installed the cut spring, did you align the spring end into the tab?
And did you check it after the front end was all back together, before it was placed back on the ground?

Re: Spring and perch

Does the opposite side of the spring fit properly on the perch with the cut end as shown in the perch?  If so, shouldn’t be any issue.

Opposite side of the cut coil, not the opposite end of rhe spring.
