I had never heard this before and am wondering if any of you have. A friend with a 66 Mustang had someone tell him that the 65 & 66 Mustang fenders were different. The difference being that the 66 fenders have two triangle shaped stamps on the lip of the fenders where it bolts to the body, as shown in the attached picture. The picture is from my car, and is the driver’s side, my passenger side does not have these shapes.
Both of my front fenders were replaced with Ford replacements over 30 years-ago (before Ford stopped offering them). My Ford parts man is a high school friend who spent his career as a Ford parts manager (started in 1968, retired now) said he never heard this, but offered that maybe it was a stamping that indicated the facility where it was made.
Anyway, just curious if there is any validity to it.

I DO know a little about the 'after market fenders.'.....
65 & 66 fenders equally fit like crap !
Interesting.........

That is a crash folding point, so there is a designed-in place for the fender to fold when you crash it.
I never paid much attention to concours stuff…

No dimples on fenders either side here.
This is a 17U build date car.
Driver fender = 6 10 2
Passenger fender = 7 29 C3

My original fenders - 66 - has them on the driver side. None on the passengeer side, but it is a repro.

My 65 doesn't have the triangles on the fender, but there are some inverted dimples on the inner fenders at almost the same location (as shown in your picture). I believe the fenders are original equipment.

This might be similar to the different brake pedals I have come across through many years of modifying pedals for customers
Apparently there were at least three different manufacturers or designs for the brake pedal doing the exact same job on similar cars. Subtle differences in their design.

As I said I'm just curious if anybody had come across this item.
I would tend to agree with my friend, the x-parts manager and MS, that this may have been a identifier of the sub-supplier, not meant as a unique identifier for a certain model year.
I also never was a concours guy, I've modified my Mustang way too far to worry about maintaining those details.

Hey, Bob, how about showing us your installed pics of the brake hydro-boost system you installed? Hoses, pump and everything.

I'll put together a write-up and pictures of my hydroboost installation and post soon.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
