69 HVAC System

My 69 Mexican made Mustang has no HVAC system at all. From what I was told, they didn't install them in Mexico because you didn't need a heater down there. Not sure how true that is, but either way, there's no heater box, no vents, no ducts, and not even controls (the spot is empty).

I want to have heat, but would like the option to have AC sometime in the future. In other words, I don't want to buy a non AC heater box if I'll need to replace it sometime down the road when I get AC.

Here's the question: would a box for factory AC such as this:
https://www.cjponyparts.com/cj-classics-heater-box-assembly-with-factory-a-c-mustang-1969-1970/p/HBA7/?gclid=CjwKCAiA98WrBhAYEiwA2WvhOtOHadvrPqHdbzYrRMeavlnP37V7yh9RSW3tYluPt-kV01KMeGG3exoCmdoQAvD_BwE

Allow me to just have heat until I get the remaining AC parts? I bought a control for both AC and heater, but have nothing else. Other than this box, am I correct to say I'd need a motor blower, gasket kit, vents, duct work, heater core and hoses. Anything else I'd need and am I over my head on this to do myself? Experience is limited, but learning as I go.

Re: 69 HVAC System

Welcome to the forum. We really like to see pictures of the members cars regardless of condition.

I just recently installed factory  AC in my non AC 69. It was a $hit ton of work, and cost much more than an aftermarket unit. The number of specific parts is immense. I don't recommend doing factory AC unless you are well versed in it, and enjoy pain.

The part you link looks like my unit, and says it's what you want in the description. Without the fan blower and maybe other parts in the system, I don't know if you could get it function. The vents are opened and closed via vacuum lines and servos. Without the blower motor the ducts can't be attached. The Ford Shop Manual is required in my opinion for this job.

If I were you, I'd get the heater only unit, then sell it when you get around to buying the complete system.

Re: 69 HVAC System

I agree 100% with RPM.

OR, maybe buy a Vintage Air system and save the compressor, condenser and hose installation for a later date. The heater part of the install would be a simple one-day job.

Re: 69 HVAC System

With quality aftermarket systems now available from several different companies I would not waste $1 on trying to round up and get working an original system.  The parts are old and used up.  I'd much rather have a modern compressor that takes 3HP to run instead of 20HP too.  You can run an AC heater box and just not connect the AC and still have heat.  I'm sure Classic Auto Air or someone else would sell you the stuff piecemeal.

Re: 69 HVAC System

I really appreciate this information. I will be taking your advice. I don't necessarily want to go down the road of a painful and difficult install. I'll begin saving for a complete system through Vintage Air or Classic Auto Air, is one better than the other? Big mistake averted. Thanks all.

Re: 69 HVAC System

I have vintage Air in my 69.  It was a clean installation but lost the charge after about six months. I have not had time to diagnose the leak.  It did work great when it worked.
I have Vintage Air in my 66 that I installed in 2010.  It has worked flawlessly since I installed it.

Re: 69 HVAC System

I have a Vintage Gen 4 system in our 66 with the electronic controls with infinite fan speed, temp blending and vent mixing.  Love it.  Hotter'n Help at the Bash this year...even the natives were complaining...but the AC kept Mrs BB quite happy. Nuff said.
