Wanting Fuel line run through torque boxoutside frame rail, 66 Mustang

Hey Guys, got a 66 coupe with 302 going in. Currently the 5/16 ss line makes a sharp turn in back of drivers wheel to go under front clip, then turns aft and runs within a few inches parallel to the header down the tunnle a short ways.. This line was already in the car when I got it. I have added torque boxes and frame rails and am getting ready to paint the engine bay, fenderwells and interior next week. This routing has always bothered me especially when I fabbed the exhaust system and saw the proximity of the fuel line to header pipes, and the potential for ground scrape on the line in the area where it goes back inside the front clip. These lines are pretty pricey to buy another...can I rebend/straighten the bends and reform the line to where I want to run it, or is it going to crack or crimp? If I can't reform it, which line am I looking to buy to route it through the torque box down the frame rail? Seems like all the lines I looked at are bent like a pretzel as they go into the shipping box, so its tough to tell which one will work. If I end up buying another, this one will be for sale. As always, thanks for the help.

You can move aft where the fuel is protected, cut and slide 5/16 line nut on line and double flare. Take coathanger wire, bend as needed to make pattern then bend new piece of line to match.

When I had a carb in my 66, I ran a new line just outside the frame rail, then at the rear of the floor support beam, it turned and then tied into the existing line by the driveshaft.

You can purchase new sticks of 5/16" (original size) tubing at an auto parts store. Get an inepensive tubing bender and make a new line.  Use rubber around the line where it goes through the torque box so it cannot vibrate metal to metal.  Use 3/8" a/c line for the rubber grommet.  Lube it up and slide it on the tubing before you flare the ends.

Hey Guys, appreciate the replies. Will use the aft end of the one I have inatalled and bend a new one to fit the front 1/2 and tie them together w a 5/16 section of rubber fuel line.

It would be best to put SAE inverted flare on each end and use a union.  That way you never have to worry about it again.  At the very least, you need to use the first stage of the flare tool to put a bubble on the end of the tubes so the hose will not be rubbing on a bare cut end of tubing. Since you have to do that, why not just flare and install the union.  It will be safer.

Didn't the factory fuel line run through the torque box in 1968? If so, you might can get a pre bent line for a 68?
Steve, I was wondering if you had to run a larger diameter fuel line when you put in the bigger engine? I need to run a new fuel line too, so should I run a larger diameter now for a future 351 stroker later?

Re: Wanting Fuel line run through torque boxoutside frame rail, 66 Mustang

I ran 3/8" steel lines many years ago on the fastback.  Unfortunately, the MSD Atomic EFI REQUIRED the use of their high pressure hose on the entire system.  I hate it that I could not install some nice steel lines that would last forever.  Now I can look forward to having to replace a very expensive long hose at some point in the future.

The 69-70 line went through the torque box and then straight over to the rocker panel and then went to the backl of the car along that rail.
