What is the typical useful life of an AOD? What are the first signs when they are getting tired? Mine doesn't leak a drop, and seems to work fine after 140,000 miles, which has me wondering....
Contemplating a long road trip in October and I need to get my thrash list together.

I'd pull the pan. Check the color/smell of the fluid and inspect for excessive clutch material in the pan. If there isn't much material and the oil looks and smells good, change the filter, seal it up and replenish the fluid. As long as the TV cable is adjusted properly the AOD should last a long while. From what I read, a flush is not necessary and if anything it will stir up things that are currently happy.

Once or twice in there. Seriously, it did run that long with no problems. Changed fluids anywhere from 30 to 50,000

IME when an auto starts to go they slip in high gear. The higher gears typically have fewer clutches and thus they wear out faster. If it drives and shifts fine now I would see no reason to expect that it will suddenly fail on a road trip. A properly maintained auto that isn't overheated and isn't used to tow beyond its capacity (or used to tow incorrectly) should last a very long time. Heat is the biggest killer. If the fluid is brown and/or smells burnt I'd be concerned. If its nice and red and smells normal I think you're fine. A supplemental cooler is never a bad thing to keep the temperature in check. But, 140k miles I wouldn't say is concerning. I've got 186k miles on my gas truck and its been used to tow, haul, etc. I'd jump in it and drive to Maine or Florida today without any concern it would fail.
