Going back in with a Eaton Truetrak with 3.55.1 gear It should be a big change ...I think it had a 279 single track it may be a 300 gear dont really remember now car was originally a 289/ 4speed car supposedly only has 69,000 miles on car....I pulled the 289/ 4 speed and now it has a 302 roller out of explorer with 5 speed now and those gears do not like the 5 speed and the bigger cam..
I guess I will be posting the third member soon lol.

Billy - what do you mean by "those gears don't like the 5-speed"? Is it a 1st gear, or the 5th gear issue?
Offline
just needs a lower gear
Offline
did not have to use 4th and 5th really

Could be either. The Fox V8 T5s were geared for use with a 2.73 rear gear, but 5th was a highway gear. It was geared for fuel economy and so Ford could more easily meet CAFE requirements. One of the first mods a lot of guys made to their Fox cars was a 3.55-4.10 rear gear swap. Ford was selling both the gears and then the Z-Spec T5, regeared for use with the better rear gear ratios. This all worked well in the Fox cars because the 5.0 would happily rev to 6,000. Behind a typical 289 or 302 which only likes to rev to 5,000 first gear can be too short with the Fox 1st and numerically high rear gears, but a Z-Spec will have a decent 1st gear, but 5th may be too tall to pull on the highway below 75 or 80 MPH. The issue is we need to think of the rear gear ratio and the transmission as a package. They need to be matched to get the best overall performance.

I have the 4-speed in mine with a 3.00 ratio rear axle. I love it... Great combo with acceleration and I still get around 21/22 mpg.

It was 2-79 gear single track....the trick on that car was the T5 was out of 4cyl turbo ThunderChicken.

I agree, I live in an area with highways no interstates. Can't use 5th gear under 60 mph with my 325 I had, so I switched to 380 gears from Quick performance. Great choice

Which transmission do you have?
I run a stock ‘92 5.0L/T5 (3.35)/3.25 Currie traction lock.
Around 45-50 mph, I use 4th gear.

Ford Performance Parts Super-Duty T-5 Transmissions M-7003-Z5th is .63 so it works good for me with the 3:80 and rural highways. Still a good rpm for interstate

Ahhh, makes sense to me.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
