Your cap, version 1.2, has expired. You are now required to purchase cap version 1.2a-version C which is currently the only version supported with current fuel systems. Support for your old cap is now unavailable.

Isn't that newer version, 1.2a version C, a weld-on cap?
I bought a Stant cap that I'm really liking. At least the thing is tight when the writing is vertical and the open me things are horizontal. I'm going to dissect the dead cap to see if maybe there's a way to graft them together. New ones are about $70 and don't completely seat with the logo straight. I'm sick of that stupid crap. You'd think that it'd be easy to address that in the manufacturing process after all this time but I guess it's beyond all those engineers who can't. Sigh ... Shoulda bought that GTO ...
I got the missing piece back, thanks to my long, flexible fishing magnet. I didn't even have to use any of the matches I had out there (just in case) to see if the thing was visible down there under all that gasoline.

John, you can manipulate the little ears/threads on your filler neck to make the new cap sit straight. I had to do that on my 66.
I think those new gas caps are like the head bolts nowadays. ONE TIME USE

Thank you for the suggestion. I've actually tried that several times. It's entirely possible that I'm completely inept but I wasn't able to bend the neck parts enough to make a difference (the old cap was still sloppy when the Mustang logo on the cap was vertical). The new Stant cap is really tight so I think the filler neck is perfect as it is.
I also tried rotating the part on the cap that engages the filler neck, which did nothing as far as clocking, but apparently did weaken the mechanical connection between the cam and the cap.
I didn't think to try bending the little flaps on the cap. Maybe I'll mess around with that to see if there's a solution there.

My 'Mustang' cap also was not straight when tightened. I used made a gasket out of 1/16" gasket material (paper type) to fit. WIt worked for me, and provided a tight seal for the cap.

Interesting. Did you add the gasket material on the circular rubber gasket just under the center piece ("center piece" = part that emancipated itself from my cap and fell into the tank) on the cap?

Yes, between the rubber gasket and the center piece (with the tangs that secures the cap). It is more of a shim to restrict the cap from going too far "clockwise" so that the cap sits correctly.
The gasket material I used is 'stiff', I'm not sure how long it will last, but it did seal as I've haven't any gas spill out.
