Can’t figure this out

Welded tower seams in driver side only.  No apparent cracks or damage. Forces more work on my 65.  I will have to grind that down and weld it nicely, then do the passenger side to match.

Re: Can’t figure this out

The guy that "welded" it fingered there was no way he could do any better on the other side, so he quit.

Re: Can’t figure this out

It makes me wonder, was the engine out when he did it?  If not its not actually that bad of a job considering how out of position you would be when trying to weld it.

As to reasoning behind it, well, no idea.  But I try not to worry about not being able to think like the guy that came before, because if he was a moron and I can think like him, wouldn't that make me one too?

Re: Can’t figure this out

I would say for whatever reason it got out of it's station without being welded,  so when it was kicked into a repair area, the repairman did an ugly welding job.  Even though we can't say much for it's aesthetic value, it has held up for over 50+ years.

Re: Can’t figure this out

There was a picture floating around the internets years back that was of a shock tower bent and pulling apart in that area.  I might try searching around to see if it still around somewhere.  I remember thinking about welding mine up, but I decided against it, when I also decided against notching.  But I did add the plates on the outside.

If multiple things can go wrong, the one that will go wrong will be the one that causes the most damage.

Re: Can’t figure this out

Other than being "ugly-as-sin" those welds will be there when the car rusts to nothing...
In the trade those are known as 'gorilla-weldz'   (big-strong-& UGLY !)
If one listens closely one can hear a tiny-small little voice pleading...."grind-me oh baby grind me"!

Re: Can’t figure this out

I'm not sure what you're complaining about.... this was a '69 Mach 1 I bought a few years ago  that was a "driver" at the time (thanks ebay) google pick a number between 1 and 13

Did you buy it sight unseen?  A buddy of mine worked on a car a guy bought off eBay for which he'd paid like $30k (and this was almost 20 years ago, so it would easily be twice that today).  '72 convertible IIRC with a 351C.  Supposed to be a completely finished car.  Another 30-40k later and hundreds of hours of my buddy's time, including a new engine, and it was.

Yes, it was my one-and-only EBay car, it was in the midwest and I'm on the west coast.  There were pictures in the listing but the 'repair' was buried under a layer of grease and paint.  The car was the most cancerous thing I've ever worked on and it was built to deceive, there were 3 layers of floor, they actually took a good floor pan, cut it up and slapped in on the underside so it looked clean when you looked under it, it was held up by a couple spot welds and sealant, they did the same thing to the top and pop riveted it down to the rusted out sections of floor that were left.  When they put the front fenders on they sunk sheet metal screws through the fenders and into the cowl, then body filled and painted over them.  Only way to take off the fender was to cut through the paint.  I still have the shock tower hanging on my 'wall of shame' in my shop, it's a good reminder to do inspections in person.
