'67 fenders

Hey guys. I'm looking into some fenders for my friend's '67 stang. Looks like Mustangs Unlimited has them for about $300 for both but I'm not sure of their quality. Is it better to go OEM? Who should I buy from?

Re: '67 fenders

OEM is always best but anymore, finding good OEM fenders is getting as scarce as chicken lips.

Next is "original tooling" which may in fact be better than re-pops but, not always.

Re-pops seem to be hit or miss on fitment....

You can expect differing opinions on this topic.

Look on craigslist too.....sometimes you'll find good sheetmetal there..

Re: '67 fenders

I don't have first hand experience with the 67 and up fenders. But when I did the first resto on my 66 coupe I bought ah repop pair and they where so bad I ended up throwing them away! The best thing you could do is go to a swap meet. You'll get ah better deal and you can actually see what your getting as opposed to Craigslist or Ebay.

It's hard to type "funny"

Re: '67 fenders

Hi David, If your weather clears, it would probably be good idea for you and your friend to head to Harrisburg, PA to visit CJ Pony and compare the cheapies, versus Dynacorn and original tooling.  Not sure of their hours and you should call to make sure they have them in stock.  I think seeing them and checking for metal gage, crispness of bends, etc., will save you a lot of time in the long run.  I have a growing pile of cheap sheet metal - I suppose if I was a gifted metal worker/panel beater I could have made some of them fit but my time is valuable and doing the math, I can't afford to buy stuff that I have to fix and as Josh said, some of the "better" stuff isn't so good so you should look before buying.  CJ has frequent sales and you may find paying sales tax to carry them back will be cheaper than shipping a fender from another vendor.  How's your car doing?

Re: '67 fenders

Only thing bad about going to look at aftermarket fenders is the look great right out of the box and you don't realize how terrible they are going to fit until you put them on the car.  The only real gauge of quality I have figured out to use on the aftermarket stuff is to take your thumb and see how far you can dent the metal with just thumb pressure.  Most will bend easily, but I have seen some stuff that was either thicker or had better mettalurgical properties and felt really solid.

My money is on restoring an original fender rather than buying reproductions.  I bought two brand new NOS FORD fenders for my 66 and they are junk also. That was $900 wasted.  The $120 fenders Ramses has on his car line up better than the NOS.  (Mine were NOS black primer versions that had been stored about 15 years).

Money you enjoy wasting is NOT wasted money... unless your wife finds out.

Hey Gary, how are ya? My cars going okay. Got the carb functioning pretty well thanks to your help. That was awhile back though. Haven't done much to it other than keep it clean. Should have a couple interior parts to add to it after Christmas.

Thanks guys for the input on the fenders.

X2

Once bought a reproduction front fender with the intention to use parts of it to patch my original fender. Tried it on when I received it just to check things out and still wonder if it really was supposed to be a '67 Mustang fender...

Re: '67 fenders

or find 68's and patch the side marker holes. I did the opposite. Could not find 68's so used 67's and has the hole and lip cut in. Same fender only difference is side marker.
