Hey Guys,
Had issues with my Unisteer rack with Bump steer for many years. Ive called Unisteer many times and it was always it’s the tires, shocks and suspension issue. Those were new. Never the rack. I bought a bump steer kit and had it aligned. Still had bump steer. It actually was worse. I did some more research online and found that the block coming out of the rack was loose. I found another video on how to tighten the rack. I was so excited that this might fix all the years of bad steering. Well it did but it also created another issue. It now wanders really bad. Very disappointing. I checked the play from the steering wheel through the steering joints and there is no play to the rack. It’s all direct. I think the play is in the rack. I’m about ready to pull this Unisteer off and be done with it. Maybe go with a TCP rack or a Borgeson set up. I have my steering column modified with a shaft for a rack. I have a GM 2 unit pump with a modified 5.0 serpentine system. I hate to change power steering pump systems since I have that dialed in. Can I use my GM 2 pump with the Borgeson and TCP rack. I think I’ll call Unisteer next week and see if there’s a solution to the wandering. It’s like driving a 1950s grain truck it’s that bad. It’s the start of the car driving season so I don’t want my car out of commission for two long. Thanks for the help!

Borgeson can use the Gen II pump. Not TCP, though.
Borgeson is your best bet.
I have borgeson on my 69 with a Gen II pump and it drives great. Only problem I had is the plastic ventilated cap on the pump leaked. I solved it with an aluminum tank having a better vent system in the cap. Of course, that added another $120 to the cost just to get a pump that doesn’t leak. If you go that route, I have a couple of extra Gen II pumps. Will throw in the plastic tank and cap for no extra.
The TCP I just bought cost $3,300 without the pump. It requires 1,600 psi. I have the KRC pump.

Bump steer is typically caused by the arc of the tie rods being different than the arc of the LCAs. At rest if the tie rods aren't parallel to the ground that's typically a red flag. Typically bump steer is addressed by either changing the height on the tie rod at the spindle connection, or lowering or raising the rack with offset bushings. This is tricky enough on a car that had R&P steering stock once you start lowering the ride height and making other changes. IMO I've never seen the need to go to R&P with these cars. I have no bump steer whatsoever with my Borgeson setup. If you are going to make a change that's where I'd go.
IMO a manufacturer that always suspects installer error or another component isn't really interested in helping their customers; they are interested in allaying blame. That's not customer service. That's the guise of customer service because someone picks up the phone or sends an email. Good companies want you to be satisfied and don't care if the problem is caused by their product. Happy customers return. Disgruntled ones don't.

I have a power steering Unisteer R&P along with the MII front suspension. As TKO mentioned, the instructions indicate that the tie-rods need to be parallel to the ground with the car at rest.
My steering was tight, but any slight move of the steering wheel would cause car movement. I found that the Borgeson pump pressure was too high. I purchased the Borgeson Pressure-Reducing Kit #899001, that contains several different washers and reduced the pressure to 950-1050 psi, from 1200-1350 psi. Steering is still tight but less critical to slight steering wheel movement.
Hope this helps.

Did you have any issues with your Mustang steering collar matching up with the box. Any suggestions with my current steering column that was modified with a U joint for rack? Ill keep you in mind with the pumps. Are they new pumps? Any pics of your modifications?

I should have included that to get the ride height I wanted, I replaced the normal height spindles contained in the MII kit, with 2" drop spindles.
