P heads are a pita!!!

I went over my options this morning.  I've fretted and thought and over thought and thought again how I could make these heads work on the 63 Gal.   I had Mustang factory shorties on it when I pulled it years ago.  Problem is, I am determined to switch back to the column shifter.  It took me 5+ years to find those pieces!  Here is shorties on P heads.

This could actually be workable with massaging.  Except the collector runs right through shift linkage.

Here is the flotech headers I bought to use.  See how it dumps around the number 3, clears the shift linkage, but is going to cause steering issues. See the massaging I did on 3.

Here is the Flashshark headers.  Just ain't going to work.

Finally, my last option was just plain old factory logs.  Confirmed in serval places people have used them with p heads.  Yeah that's going to be tight... grinding fun!

Left this morning session thinking I wished I hadn't unwrapped it.  Thinking I'm just going to change out the p heads, or modify the piece of unobtatium, and just beat on and use the shorties.  Guess the bright side to that is I don't have to remodify my exhaust.   And this is why this just keeps getting put on the back burner...

If so you have 'plenty' of tubing pre-bent  to make something work.........

Re: P heads are a pita!!!

I will open the hipo box tomorrow and put it on there and snap a pic.   I do not believe the hipo manifold will work on the Gal though I think it's going to interfere with the steering box/shifter bellcrank.  That said, I really want to inspect them anyways.

It seems the key to making a header work with P's is the tube needs to come out some before it downturns.

If you go with the 5.0L GT40 heads, then, depending on your cam, you may have to install stiffer valve springs. I used the stock 98 5.0L heads on my 351W and I had valve float at about 4600 rpm. I installed a stiffer set of springs and no problem with valve float after that.

Re: P heads are a pita!!!

Factory 5.0 headers are junk.  I'd bet the cast manifolds flow better.  The switch to tubular headers was made to cut cost, not increase performance.  A set of decent shorties on the 5.0 made it run like a different car.  The pinch at the port causes all kinds of issues on the factory ones.  Why Ford couldn't just use a 3/8" bolt without a 9/16" head like EVERYONE else is completely beyond me.

If you want to cut and try I have two sets of used 5.0 headers lying around.  One set is MAC the other is Ford Racing as I recall.  PM me if interested.
