Aluminum flywheel and JBA shorty header findings

Love 'em both.  Wow.  When I first fired it up the aluminum flywheel spun up so fast I thought I had broken something loose.  I've put about 75 miles on the car since I put in the 4.10 rear, T5, flywheel/clutch and headers.  The headers sound great.  Nice, low rumble.  I think they sound better than the full length Hookers I had on there, and they're a HELL of a lot easier to work around.  Thanks for the recommendation Steve!

I finished up my TCP brace kit a few weeks ago so now I need to make it over to the shop to get the shock towers pushed out to stock (about an 1" away).  After that I should have some decent clearance.

The flywheel isn't hard to drive with at all.  A tad more throttle from a dead stop but that's it.  And WOW do you have to be careful when you hit it while rolling.  Crazy response.

Now I get to play for a month or so until I order the stroker short block

On a side note, has anyone used one of those speedometer or gauge restoration services?  I replaced my speedo cable last week and the speedometer lasted about two days before the gague crapped out.  I was going to do a refurb/paint/LED thing myself but if the whole gague needs attention I thought about just shipping it out.

Ahhhh yeah!!!!
"Wingga-wingga-wingga!"
No problems driving on the street, huh?! Great!!
Been wanting a true-life experience from someone.
Although you DO have 4.10:1 gears..wonder how a taller gear would react?!
Was it very pricey? Where did you get it?

Re: Aluminum flywheel and JBA shorty header findings

Glad to hear the report on the aluminum flywheel. I wonder if it would be as easy to drive if you did not have the 4.11 gears.  They probably help a bit with the take-off.  I hope you can give some long-term reports on it as time goes on.

Re: Aluminum flywheel and JBA shorty header findings

Agreed on the gears comment.  My old 3.25 (or was it a 3.0?) would have probably been a little more problematic.

The only issue I've had so far with the quicker revs was that unintentional 180 when I got a little crazy with the gas.  At least I was halfway smart enough to test it out in an open parking lot.

6sally6, I picked up a 2000 Explorer rear end with brakes for $200 at a junk yard.  It's the 31 spline beefy version of the 8.8 but it's offset, so we cut 3" out of the longer side and ran two short side axles.  Another $250 or so for the Ford posi unit and we had a nice little rear end.  That swap seems to be getting popular as the fox body rears get harder to find.

*EDIT* You also have to cut off and reweld the spring perches to the proper location.

I already had the T5 laying around the garage so I did the entire swap (plus Steve's cable kit) at once.  Loving that overdrive on the freeway.

Re: Aluminum flywheel and JBA shorty header findings

What is the part number for the headers you ended up with?

Re: Aluminum flywheel and JBA shorty header findings

Sal, there was a long string of posts about this flywheel a month or so ago.  You should be able to find it in the archives under "aluminum flywheel".
Good Luck

Sorry.  Yea, there's a novel length thread about that ridiculous flywheel mess.  I ended up getting the aluminum one for the cost of a billet steel one.  Local Ford Racing dealer, misboxed.

I think it was the 1650SJS.  I got the silver ceramic coated ones.
