So as I said in my rocker panel post I started to patch the lower portion of the outer wheel house but I figured I'd better check out the lower rear of the quarter panel to see if I could get away with just ah patch..(WRONG!) After grinding through 1/4" of bondo & Duraglass I finally came to this lovely riveted on sheet metal patch, with an older rusted out one underneath it. Also the car must have taken ah side swipe to the rear because the whole rear was FULL of bondo and hammer dings as well as surface rust as if sombody stripped it then left it in the rain...Ahh the 80's
. So needless to say I'll be doing a full face quarter skin...

I found a similar fix on my 37 Pontiac....only behind the bondo was newspaper and window screen! It's amazing what we go through to get the fix done correctly when just a generation ago it was " slather the bondo over it!

Yeah I have an old Chiltons manual that has ah "How to" pictorial, showing you how to do rust repair using fiberglass and bondo to fill large holes. Like you said it's amazing how far we've come in this day and age with tools and information that just wasn't avalible back then..

Back in the late 80s, being a novice to welding and body work, I signed up for a night course in autobody repair at a local community college. The instructor owned a local body shop. The second night he showed us how to repair a rusted rocker panel. He hammered in the rust with a hammer and filled it with body filler. I never went back.
