Bullet Bob Evans Tribute

Robert “Bullet Bob” Evans was one of a kind. Emanating from the greatest generation, he lived the American dream. He was fortunate to live in SoCal during the infancy of hot rodding. He was at the epicenter of the hobby as it sprang to life. He drag raced many decades in the 70s, the ride he mentioned was flathead four powered rail. He was proud that Gray Baskerville of HOT ROD magazine fame bestowed upon him the “Bullet Bob” moniker. He knew Kong, he knew Jake Jacobs and innumerable hot rod legends.

Born one year before the Boomer years, he was great to the core. He didn’t age, he just adapted. Carbureted flatheads? All in. He worked in the electrical field and had a beautiful mind. Endlessly curious, he never stagnated. Electronic fuel injection came along, he became conversant in the technical aspects. He knew the Mustang wiring schematics like the back of his hand. He had a manual mill and he wanted to convert it to digital, so he did. Research, study, take action. Added a DRO and spent many an hour in front of the mill. Absolutely limitless generosity, energy and fortitude.

He was struggling with SolidWorks so my brother and I connected him with my nephew Adam, an ME who grew up on SolidWorks. They connected and each was impressed with the other. A 30 something engineer impressed with the vision he had for a next level aluminum head for a flathead four. And an 80 year old gearhead impressed with a kid who knew automotive, engineering and the related fields thoroughly. He had an insightful comment to me afterwards. He said, “I don’t want this to sound wrong, but I get the impression that your nephew is a great engineer.” I knew what he meant.

He did so many projects for other people without allowing them to ask. Typically he’d hear of a Mustanger at a crossroads and he’d offer to do something to solve the issue. One project he offered to do, drew the electrical diagram, assembled all the pieces and sent all of them out via UPS – declining any recompense. He was sent a gift card for his favorite restaurant and he said he and Jean had a great evening.

He was many things; Funny, modest, direct, humble, sharp, opinionated, quick to horse around and deeply caring. He loved to make people laugh and he was a great story teller with a deliberate delivery and a deep resonant voice.  Some of the projects and favors he did for other people were incredible.

Anyone who got close to him realized how deeply important this group of guys was to him. He called my brother “BroPaul” which he took as a compliment. In fact he said today he is changing his screen name to BroPaul to honor Bob. His friendship means a lot to me and I’m crushed that Bullet has passed on. I was closer to Bob than anyone on this forum. And like many of you, I loved that man.

He extended incredible hospitality to me without having ever met in person. He told Jean that I was going to spend the night with him before my first Bash so we could caravan. She asked how well he knew me. He said, “Well enough.” And that was that. A deep friendship was forged. We had innumerable long, meaningful  conversations. He learned stuff about me from my brother. We grew closer over the years.

There aren’t enough words to express how important Bullet Bob was to me and many of my MS friends. He wrote this in a text “I used to have one BIL in CA. Now I have three, plus a Navy-met best friend. Outstanding.”

Bullet, I will miss you deeply and be thankful for the joy you brought into our lives. I'm deeply proud that this man found it worth his while to know me. Peace.

Truly a beautiful tribute rpm, thanks so much for that, though I now seem to have gotten something in both my eyes at the same time.

Re: Bullet Bob Evans Tribute

I met Bullet at the MS hosted Bash in Gruene TX. At the breakfast at that little Mexican restaurant I sat next to him and asked him question after question. What a great dude. He told story after story, easy as could be. I tend to talk to much, but I knew with Bullet, that if I kept my mouth shut, I could learn something. That Bash launched a great friendship. I spoke with him on the phone, I've texted him innumerable times. HIs patience is incredible, he helped me on many occasions.

When RPM told me the news it hit harder than I thought it might. Just a shock.

Bless you Bullet.

BroPaul

P.S. Hey MS, I don't see how I can change my screen name. I'd like to go with BroPaul as Bullet called me that. Can you help a brother out?

Re: Bullet Bob Evans Tribute

My first post on the FYI Forum titled Where do I start  Bullet replied  quickly with capitalization and Punctuation. I was thinking to myself  I don’t think this is the right place for me . Boy I am glad I was able to be myself. My response as I type you will find I speak Cajun Ebonics  to let him know  where I was from . That one interaction not taken well I could have missed out on great relationships I have had with my FYI brothers I have come to love. As I contemplated going to my first bash I took the advice that was given to start a rolling traveling restoration project. Who knew that decision would change my life. I was allowed to speak at the first Bash thanking everyone for accepting me and my wife showing nothing but love and to take that love back out into the world. Bullet my Friend ,Brother, father figure ,mentor pulled me aside  and said you get it young man you have to come to Montrose I am hosting the next bash I gave him my word thinking  this would be stupid crazy to do. I am so glad I did . I received calls  and made calls for over a decade no matter what life through at me from Bullet . My dad passed my mom got Dementia almost lost my wife to a surgery gone wrong. And milestones daughters graduations marriages.I made it to  Montrose I won the  wrench award  first time out lol 17 hrs  and the million dollar hwy to see  Bullet . As I type with some capitalization  and punctuation with tears in my eyes at 3am . I know I will miss my friend .I don’t know how long I will be here but I promise to pray for my FYI brothers and  Families  for the rest of my life . This is more than just a Mustang Forum in my life . With this forum I thought I was restoring a Mustang turns out We were restoring  people lives .He always gave thanks  to Mustang Steve for starting this safe space .Rest in peace Bullet Love Coupe and family . And if the capitalization and punctuation is still wrong  please give me grace Love yall much

Re: Bullet Bob Evans Tribute

I first spoke to Bob while I was buying a wiring harness from Corky that he'd built for him. Without it, my 65 would still be a stalled project. Bob was instrumental in getting Leonie and I to our first Bash in Franklin Tn. While there, he told me believed in warmly welcoming every new person who he met, without him it may have been my only Bash.
Bob had the rare ability to make everyone feel like an old friend after first meeting them.
At the Wimberly Bash I decided to take a leaf out'a Bobs book, and greet Charles and Felicia when they first arrived at the hotel. Coupe, I'm sort'a surprised you didn't just keep driving to get away from the crazy Aussie at your door, blame Bob, he always brought out my nicer side.
I feel privileged to have known him.
RIP Bullet, my Friend. You are missed by many.

Re: Bullet Bob Evans Tribute

I remember that the welcoming committee lol 😂 .I was going to take the Coupedaddy license plate off the front as it looks like a real plate. I did not want no trouble with the police traveling when I pulled in Mustang Steve jump up and said Coupedaddy and y’all welcomed me as we were parking. From that point on I knew I was in the right place.

Well said Charles. No grammar cop here brother. Nope. Just much love and respect from Fresno. You are a great friend and your words resonate with me strongly. Your reaching out over the phone on the regular is a graceful, elegant thing in today's digital world. We are way more similar than different and as Bullet said, "You get it."
Blessings...

Thank you MS for this group, for this forum and your pioneering spirit that got a bunch of Mustangs back on the road, in better mechanical condition than when new. Thanks for the screen name change. It brought tears to my eyes when I saw it.

Mike said this photo left to right; Jean's brother Roy talking to Mike's cousin, Bullet in the dragster, Grandpa Evans in the straw cowboy hat, Otis, holding his Mom (Becky's) hand, Emmett in the ballcap (went to HS with Bullet) Mike's step uncle Paul, Mike's cousin Rob with binoculars, and Mike, age 6 or 7.

Great tributes for a great man, guys, who really made a difference in this world and the Mustang hobby.

This pic was from one of the Bashes in Texas in 2010. This picture notes what we have now lost in this forum.

Re: Bullet Bob Evans Tribute

Last year, Bob machined me a custom bolt to use a valve spring compressor on pedestal Ford heads.   He machined it for me, then paid the postage to send it to me, and would not accept a dime in return.   I tried to pay him back for his time and efforts.  He just wouldn't have it.

THAT is the kind of man Bullet Bob wasl

Here's to you Bob!

Re: Bullet Bob Evans Tribute

Thank you BroPaul for posting those pictures, imgbb is not letting me post pictures this week. It's no coincidence that everyone had the same opinion of Bullet, and so many were introduced to the Bashes by him. Bullet talked me into attending the 2017 Bash in fort Walton Beach Florida. Without ever meeting him, Bob let me stay at his house on the way so that we could caravan with RV6 and Josh Kabob.  When I pulled into the Bash motel, Coupe Daddy pulled in next to me and introduced himself.

There are no two finer people than Bullet and Coop. I'll throw in another thank you to Mustang Steve for starting the Bashes which has led to strong friendships with many of you all. At least once a month Bullet would tell me that he it was very grateful to Steve for bringing us all together.

Re: Bullet Bob Evans Tribute

I just spoke with Jean who is understandably still emotional and crushed that her Bob is gone. She said Bob suffered an aortic aneurysm, which is nicknamed the Widowmaker. He did suffer a little bit before they began working on him. Both Bob and Jean agreed that they should try surgery to fix the aneurysm. He took 10 pints of blood to no avail.

They are still working out when and where they will have a celebration of life gathering, but maybe in the springtime. He will be cremated and there is no church service. She wanted me to tell the Mustang guys that she was happy we were a part of his life and that he was happiest when he was with us.

I can say that among my many phone call conversations with Bullet that he expressed great appreciation for this group of like-minded guys. He sometimes became emotional when mentioning how much some of these guys mean to him. It's hard to understand the bond made through this forum, website, the technical insights, the problem solving and the periodic face to face interactions at the Bashes. I'm so thankful that I was able to become friends with Bullet.

His love for the speedster he built and his regret for selling it were huge, really deep feelings. He would joke about the -oh no I used a word I shouldn't have--kicking machine he had to kick himself for selling it. I'm probably recalling it inaccurately but I believe the car ended up in the Great Lakes area and he went and visited it (well, and the buyer.) He said that in its current regalia (photo) it was a bit different from his build as the new owner participated in The Great Race which necessitated a metal body, which the fella had fabricated out of aluminum to match the original fiberglass body. He wondered aloud if he might be able to locate the original body. I think he had inquired but that the trail had gone cold.

So many fond memories of conversing with Bob and troubleshooting and so many, often funny text messages.

Re: Bullet Bob Evans Tribute

I think the first time I met Bullet was under the dash of my Mustang during the Bash at Ovilla !
Mustang Steve's driveway...pitch black dark..  1500 miles away from home... alot of 'the guys' were ...uh.. "feeling-kinda-mellow" (Glen, you can relate)...  Bullet under the dash with  a guy from Myrtle Beach(ME!) trying to figger-out where the smoke was coming from and why EVERYTHING had gone dark !!
This was the first moments of a wonderful relationship with a really cool guy and a great friend. Since then we have spent MANY an hour on the phone 'just yakk'in' as Bob often describe it.  Not only was he a great guy to JUST hang out with and talk to...he was SCARY SMART !!  He  just decided one day... playing with his milling machine, to take a huge block of
'Al-you-many-yum' as he would say, and design & build a custom head for a 4 banger Ford engine! (I believe he was getting pretty close to completion of this project) His reason you might axe?!...Just because !
A few years back he sent me one of his custom CV thingies that reduce the voltage for Mustang instrument cluster gauges.  Just because...
This one was wayyy better and adjustable than the FoMoCo one.  Many of our hours long BS sessions were so interesting they bordered on....'is this guy telling the truth!?!'  The Dos Equis beer...."The worlds most interesting guy" had nothing on Bob Evans.
Growing up in the 50's &60's I read HOT ROD magazine cover-to-cover regularly!
All the cool T-buckets...coupes...roadsters...dry lake racers...customs...street rods..all the SoCal stuff BITD
Pete & Jake's California Kid coupe...Ak Miller...Eric Rickman's photography...Wes Cooper's 'trick carbs' & custom camshafts...Pete Jackson gear drives...Ed Iskenderian...on & on...Bullet hung out with them !!  He built hot rods with them !!
I read about'em....Bullet knew them by their first name !!
Bullet and Jean AND Michael took several road trips with some of these hot rod icons to Vegas to "hang-out" with Wes Cooper at his house!  BTW...a Wes Cooper hand built & designed carb  They are a highly desired carb even today and are worth MUCH-O bux  because of their flow and adjustability. One-of-a-kind stuff !!  He built a couple for his friend Bob to run on his boat-tail speedster banger engine !
PETE JACKSON GEAR DRIVES ??...his buddy 'Kong' Jackson helped design it...(figured-out using one gear bigger around than the other would make it work 'right')
Bullet was right-in-the-middle' of the So Cal hot rod scene.         An AMAZING FELLA!!!
One of my most  memorable moments with Bob was....when he and Jean came to the beach to visit with us a few days !
ALL you guys know my LOVE for open headers and snotty idling Mustangs...Right? ! We were on our way to a restaurant and Bob and I drove the Mustang. He decided to turn off his hearing aids for the ride. I ripped thru the gears a few times on the way. FULL OUT.. super stock style !! (in my mind anyway)..let'in-it-ALL-hang-out !! Bob was hoop'in and hollow'in like a 16 year old kid!!
I was laugh'in...he was laugh'in... I will NEVER forget that smile that day... He was truly a car guy..and a great human being
Gosh I'm gonna miss him....

Re: Bullet Bob Evans Tribute

Our first bash was Montrose in 2016. Bullet was the first Basher I met and also the host. We have caravaned with Bullet to most of the bashes since that day. As a member of the Crazy 8's text group we have shared a lot of laughs and some sadness.

I'll miss his smile and his comradery.

Re: Bullet Bob Evans Tribute

Sally mentioned Pete & Jake's California Kid Coupe, but Jake (Jim Jacobs) had his own yellow 34. Both 34s grabbed the cover of Rod and Custom magazine. Bullet and Jake were buddies since high school. Jake was the guy who welded up the frame on Bullet's Speedster. I ran across these two pics of Jake's yellow 34 which were in Bullets shop and asked about the pics.Bullet said he took those pictures of Jake's 34 in Jake's shop. Bullet certainly rolled with the big boys, until he started having around us.

I heard this song today and it reminded me of him:

REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on.
