I have 1967 Mustang convertible stock 6 that my wife and I are getting ready to do some minor body and under carriage work. We have ordered a new floor pan due to the originals rusting out. My grandpa passed it to my mom and she passed it down to me. Being a ’67, it doesn’t have shoulder belts. I am worried about getting into an an accident, such as being rear ended. I have heard a three-point belt system can be installed via the door panel without interfering with the top. However, I worry the belt will not be able to be mounted high enough and compress the spine of the driver. I love the car and don’t want to sell it. It’s very sentimental. I am scared to drive it, at times, without the shoulder belts. I think about where I’m going and what roads I will be in first. I want to make sure what ever I do is the best and safest option possible without compromising the integrity of the car. Does anyone have any suggestions, please?

There are several Youtube videos available for installing shoulder (3 point) belts in classic convertible Mustangs. Here is one for doing a 68.

You may some help at Wesco Perfromance:

Some Fox body convertible seats have a shoulder belt retainer outboard of the head restraint. Perhaps other car brands seats have the same set up.
Since you’re already looking for new seats it may be worth while looking into that option.
I removed those retainers from the 94 Fox seats that I put in my car . Instead I installed a Shelby “roll” bar and attached the upper belt loop on it.

Mabe consider installing a 68 Shelby convertible roll bar. It has shoulder belt mounts. Www.cobranda.com has them. Not cheap, but what $ amount do you put on safety?

MS, all of their roll bars have the following disclaimer:
THIS DECORATIVE BAR WILL NOT PROTECT OCCUPANTS IN THE EVENT OF A ROLLOVER, NO LIABILITY IS EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED

That “Roll bar” does not come with upper shoulder belt mounts. I had to do a lot of head scratching to figure out how to do that.
As the LT stated the Shelby convertible “Rollbar” is not a real roll bar.

The shoulder belt mounts feed out of the front of the interior quarters that fit around the roll bar. I know it is only for looks. My 68 GT500KR convertible had them.

I would add that any single loop rollbar will not offer much help in a roll over. There really needs to be additional supports on that single roll bar to offer any real protection … especially in a convertible.
Just saying.
