    Clutch cable life

    My clutch cable broke a few days ago.  It's a genuine FORD part M-7553-E302.  I looked back and it has less than 5,000 miles on it (installed in 2012).   It broke where it was crimped into the threaded part that goes on the clutch fork pull me/push you lever.  Before it broke there was no indication of binding - it was completely normal.  The exhaust is on the opposite side of the engine so that couldn't have been a factor.

    I'm really disappointed that it didn't last for more miles - should have IMHO.  

    Just curious to know if anyone else has had similar experiences or suggestions/comments.

    If it was a Motorcraft part and you have your receipt it should have a lifetime warranty.  

    I've actually never seen one fail, even with all the Fox and SN95 cars we raced over the years.  I have one on my shelf that I'm sure has 50k on it from my '89 GT that I had just panned to reuse in that project.  I'll ask my buddy if the cable in his '95 Cobra is still the original, but if it is it would have to have like 200k on it.

    So, no, I wouldn't consider that normal or common.  It does make me nervous that Ford is sourcing garbage cables from some unknown vendor because they are cheaper than the ones they used to sell.  I'm hearing bad stuff about this on the Diesel forums in regards to other parts.  I also had a bad experience with some PS hoses on one of my F250s a while back and consequently will never use Motorcraft hoses again.

    It's a Ford Racing part - as specified in the MustangSteve instructions.  

    Thanks for the input about the warranty.  I can't see anything about a warranty in the instructions or on the box but may do some searching to see if maybe there is one.  Even if there is one, I've had this for a long time and don't recall where or when exactly I bought it so finding a receipt is going to be difficult, if not impossible.

    I did recently find a deal in the eBay Ford store and have two more coming.  I'm a little gun shy now and since I'm using my spare, think that maybe having a couple more is a good idea, if only to keep on the shelf for warm fuzzies.  In any case, they'll never be less expensive than they are now.  :-)

    EDIT to add:  The gist of the warranty expressed for this part on the ebay listing, which should reflect the "official" Ford position since it's from the FoMoCo store, is that it's warranted to be free of defects on delivery.  I guess after that you're on your own.

    It still has good reviews on LMR, and all the recommendations I see still say use that cable.  I read one review where it had snapped on the guy in short order.  Maybe there was a batch of bad ones?  Hard to say.

    I used an SVE clutch cable from LMR once.  It lasted two months before breaking. I bought it because the Ford cables were back ordered.  The SVE cable was stiff the whole time. Installed incorrectly? Who knows. The Ford cable is very smooth and been there years.

    '66 Fastback since July 27, 1981. Springtime Yellow, originally a 200 cu in, 4 speed. Also a '92 LX Coupe, 5.0, 5 speed.
