I recently replaced the door pin and bushings on my 66. For some unknown reason.....I removed the hinge(upper) from the body of the car.
NEVER do that unless you are really bored or something!
There is a plate inside the body that the hinge bolts attach to. When you remove the hinge the plate......you guessed it!!...it falls down to the kick panel area. Then you get to try and hold the plate with one hand while you reach around OUTSIDE the car and try to start the bolts(thru the hinge) into the plate.
Just leave the hinge in place and jack up the rear of the door until you relieve the weight of the door and just knock the hinge pin out and replace it with the bushings.

I had both my doors off the car back in '82. I do not remember if I unscrewed the hinge from the door or the jam. It sounds like I must have removed the door from the hinges 'cause I sure do not remember having any problems.

There are a couple of small metal tabs on the body that hold that piece in place. But you CAN move it around enough to get it out of those little holder tabs. And yep, its a PITA to get them back!
