Another Possible rack and pinion option

I was looking at the junkyard and I thought to my self what about a early escort rack and pinion in our cars. I measured it up and it's very close to the length that it would be needed. I wasn't able to get travel measurements. But i looked on rock auto and they show it having 3.1 turns lock to lock not bad as the mustangs have about 4.5 lock to lock. Does anyone here have a early escort who can put more light on the subject? I found out on another forum can remember which but a person installed this on a 67 and he said that he didn't have any steering loss but then again those spindle he had were granada which have shorter length to them so doesn't help the earlier stangs out.

Re: Another Possible rack and pinion option

The spindle arm for where the tie rod attaches are shorter than a 65-73 drum spindle.

Re: Another Possible rack and pinion option

For instance if you used granada spindles on a 65 mustang and changed over to a j car rack you would just about get full lock to lock because the arm is shorter than a 65-73 v8 drum spindle.

Re: Another Possible rack and pinion option

The fatman fabrications kit I think uses escort or 5.0 mustang rack with 5.0 suspension. Many people have been down this road before for many years and countless hours, trying to find a junkyard rack that will work. Most of the ones who have made something Work, are now the established companies. Unless you are an engineering student or crack fabricator, I would probably stick with one of these. Not trying to put kabosh on creativity or ingenuity ....just trying to said e you a lot of time. The thing that sucks, generally is the large pricetag for these kits. But you have to figure they did all of the sweat for you. It would be interesting if there are any new cars that might share dimensions and geometry of our old cars.

Re: Another Possible rack and pinion option

That's cool. Glad you were able to make it work. Keep us posted on how it goes and if you have any bump steer or ackerman angle problems, etc.

Re: Another Possible rack and pinion option

Will do I haven't encountered any problems of bumpsteer at all. I'm very pleased with my cars steering. I am waiting on my new center link part to be finished being machined. What I used for temporary driving was my stock centerlink with a custom square spacer mounted to it and I cut off the steering control valve off it. But now I'm having machined my new centerlink that will be essentially what I had before only machined
