Not that I want to smoke but I do need that cigarette lighter working so I can charge my cell phone on long road trips. I did pull the wire off the back and there is power. However I plugged it back in and lighter not working. I plug in the cell phone charger and it's not working. Any suggestions? thanks

Make sure the contact at the end of the socket is clean and not burnt or corroded. Make sure the socket is properly grounded. If you have power at the wire connecting to the center contact, then either you have a bad contact or a bad ground for the socket.

I found I had to really wiggle my charger wire around to make good contact, no matter what charger wire I used. The lighter works fine but there seems to be too much room inside.

I have a working cig lighter. all works fine but my charger does not work at all. My guess is that some where the contacts on the charger are not connecting correctly. I've considered replacing it with a new one.
Hope that helps.

Some of those car charger cords have a fuse in them. Maybe check for that, too.

I agree with 6sally6. And I think the part can be bought for about $4 instead of $7, if it matters to anyone.
The good part is the tubular part of the charger and its internal connections are pretty much generic. You can buy a cheapo replacement at your local auto parts store and use only the barrel part. Make sure you find one that has the rolled threads on it so the Mustang bezel will attach to it.
Since you know your wire is hot, just plug it into the identical stud on the back of the new one.
In my 66, it has the same problem. It has power but no connectivity. Sometimes a charger will work but most often not. Since I take the car on long trips, it finally dawned on me that I need more than one charger receptacle since there are likely TWO cell phones and one Garmin to be plugged in somewhere. I paid the $6.95 and purchased a dual receptacle for under the dash. Doesn't look very original, but it does the job and can be easily removed if I ever get tired of looking at it.

The reason why you cannot get a good connection with your device plug is because a true auxilliary power outlet is subtely, dimensionally different that a ciggie lighter. I have the identical issue with mine when I plug a device into it but my lighter element works just fine. That reminds me, my lighter socket is now loose in the dash from having to wiggle the plug so much. Make a note to self to tighten it up ('ceptin mine is above the A/C evap case! Grrrr!}
IMHO you'd be better off to try to wire in a hidden true power point socket.

Follow up:
I took it apart, applied some steel wool and a little elbow grease and everything works now. It's an original with Cuno Meridian, Made In The USA. Fifty years old and still red hot! Cost, 50 cents for the wool and satisfaction of working in the garage!

I will be cleaning mine and fixing it this spring.
