Got a Randall's R&P P/S with Randall's pump on my stang, How do you decrease the over boosted feel on it? I was thinking about increasing the pulley diameter but I am not sure about space for bigger pulley. Before you tell me to ask Randall, for some reason He just do not answer email from overseas, I had to actually ask my friend from the US to order for me when I bought it....

I was just looking into this yesterday. A lot will depend on the pump that is being used. From the two posts linked below, 800 (ish) PSI works well in rack equiped cars and 1100 to 1200 for gearbox systems. If it is a Saginaw style, there are kits that can be purchased to adjust pressure. I saw several sites offer those kits including Borgeson. If it is a Ford PS pump, I am not sure what your options are. If it is a late model pump, it should already be lower pressure. Slowing the pump down will not help because the pressure comes from the regulator and not necessarily speed. Of course if you run it very slow you might get it to work at idle but that's about it. If you look at pulley diameters, you would have to go pretty large and the true solution is to adjust the pressure. If you do some Google searches on "adjusting power steering pump pressure" you may find some additional help.

My father is a hydraulic engineer and when I ran these questions by him he debunked most of my ideas. The pulley would only help at idle, as soon as the engine speeds up a little, you will be right back to where you started. I showed him the flow limiters that some of the companies sell and he said that this would lead to cavitation and over heating the fluid. There is an internal bypass pressure regulator built into each pump. He showed me where you can open it up and add shims to increase the pressure, or cut the spring to decrease the pressure. I ended up getting a pump designed to be the correct volume and pressure for my steering box. It is silent and works perfectly. Find out from them what the parent vehicle is for the rack and get a pump from that car. More than likely a saginaw II pump if it is the center take-off rack. That is the default pump on most new cars form a lot of manufacturers.

If I remember right there should be a fitting that screw in on the pressure side and then your hose goes on. That hole can be drilled out. But verify with Randal. You could use a taurus pump or bronco pump etc they were on several cars with either racks or center link cars.

Thanks so much for so many ideas....too much information hard to digest LOL!! I will ask uncle Google about all you guys information and slowly digest it. When I come up with something I will post the progress...My stang is in pieces right now undergoing total ground up bolt and nuts restoration, all begin from a simple desire to change the color LOL!!
