T5 transmission question

Hello All!
I'm newly registered on this forum but have been lurking here for awhile. I own a 1966 Mustang 289, toploader 4spd, Kelsey Hayes disc brake coupe. I've had it for 33 years and drove it to high school.  I recently rebuilt the suspension with new 620 springs (1/3 coil cut off), roller perches, adjustable strut rods, KYB shocks, 1-1/8" front sway bar, monte carlo bar, export brace, 4-1/2 reversed eye leafs and rear sway bar all from following the advice found on this site. I was given a T5 Borg Warner transmission in a box and am thinking about reassembling it and doing a swap. I've read that not all T5's will work because of length differences. Could someone experienced with the conversion tell me if this transmission 1352-000-251 will work with my original bellhousing and the kits commonly available? I'd kind of like to know before I spend the time and money rebuilding it only to find out its not a good fit or the easiest swap.

Thanks for your answers!

Re: T5 transmission question

Glenn Busek(Rosehill performance)  in the HUGE metropolis of Tomball, Texas... is the resident T-5 guru. Although......several fellas on here have rebuilt them.
Try him at Steves Mustang Parts too.

Re: T5 transmission question

You can search the web for T-5 Transmissions and you will find listings for the part numbers. The best ones to use are World Class 93 and older V8 Mustang T-5's. The 93 and older 5.0 transmissions have the right input shaft lenght for what you want. From what I can see that looks like a good one.  here are a few sights but you scan find more. But like Sal said Glen would know a lot more than I.

If this forum can't fix it, it isn't broke.

Re: T5 transmission question

If that number is from the second row on the ID tag it is a very good T5.  It is a T5Z spec or Cobra transmission.  It should have the correct input shaft lenght.  It can be mated to your old style bellhousing with the help of an adapter bracket.  This will allow you to retain the bell crank system if you desire.  Other options are a MS cable setup or hydraulic.  Both require changing the bellhousing to a fox body style one. 83-93.
You will also need an adapter plate, shifter and handle and possibly have to shorten the driveshaft.  Backup lights can be adapted if so equiped.
The Hanolon T5 rebuild video is an excellent choice along with the Bad Shoe Production video on Ebay to watch and see what to look for during a rebuild.
To verify the transmission, look on the large cluster gear between the largest gear and the one next to it.  There should be an number stamped or etched there.  You want a 070, 068, 065 or an 052.  070 being the best IMHO.
I can help you source the parts needed if you wish and can be reached at sales@rosehillperformanceparts.com

Re: T5 transmission question

I have the bad shoe video and it is awesome. If you want to borrow it PM me. I decided the T5 that I bought was barely okay for a core. Glen hooked me up with a great rebuilt T5. Which I have about 100 miles on so far and it's awesome. Thanks Glen!!
