Even a blind squirrel gets it right sometimes.........

Ever since building my 5.0 engine a few years I've lived with the surging and bucking at low RPM's. I just thought it was part of living with a big cammed SBF. I had tinkered with the timing(22* initial and 36* total) and it helped some butt....still the bucking and rich carb.(Edelbrock 600cfm) continued.
Wellll..went to the car show this weekend in Myrtle Beach,SC and the Edelbrock vendor truck was there. I told him about my 600cfm carb, low vacuum..big cam.. and bucking issues. First thing he reccommended...try a stiffer metering rod spring. Went home....put in the purple(I think) springs in and...bingo   huge improvement!! (like the Donald sez...."YOU-GE improvement").
2 springs.....1 minutes worth of work...WOW!
I guess..at idle.. the rough idle would lift the metering rods up out of the jets and then down again. Now the stiffer springs hold the metering down during the idle....When the vacuum and RPM increases the rods come up like they are suppose to. I guess thats how it s'pose to work?!!

Thanks for the post Sal. I've had a similar problem with same carb on a 289. Gonna give it a try.

Dear blind squirrel,
That's one of the reasons back in the 50's, early 60's why the carter afb was taken off by their owners and replaced with holley's.

Why?... because it's so easy to tune that you can fix your surging problem with 2 springs and 1 minute's worth of work?  Yeah... nobody wants that.

Dear Just Saying,
What are those 50's, early 60's things you're talking about???

Me thinks that whether you mess with the power valve or the springs on the metering rods, you does about the same thing. When you take any carbuerator down to it's basic functions all but the worthlessly simple ones have about the same functions and adjustability. Yes, I can adjust myself right into the ditch with any of them!  Which ever one you learn can be made to work pretty dawg gone good. Then there are the SU,s!

Because back then, you couldn't get any info from carter. Everyone should just be happy to run whatever they want.

rpm says: What are those 50's, early 60's things you're talking about???

Back then carter made a carb and called it an afb (aluminum four barrell)  Eddybock needed a carb to round out their line, and bought the rights.
