question on what to set initial timing on 1968 302

Engine has an Edelbrock RPM performer camshaft.  I just got the engine broke in on a test stand.  It runs great and revs with no hesitation but I think it should be smoother at idle.  I don't think that cam is that aggressive.  I was wondering if anyone could suggest a baseline timing?  I just set it on 6BTDC to get it to fire.  Sometimes is has trouble starting but other times it fires right off.

Re: question on what to set initial timing on 1968 302

I would set static timing at 12-14 degrees BTDC.   If it pings, either back it off a couple degrees or reduce the amount of vacuum advance travel.  Set total timing 35 degrees
