MS Cobra Brake progress with questions

I had to pull my axles to begin the install of the Mustang Steve Cobra brake bracket installation. I haven't cut off the bearing retainer yet to pull the Versaille brake part.
This is a test fit of all the parts to see where they end up on the axle.
Questions.
1. Am I using the correct holes on the bracket? I wasn't sure what level the brake caliper will be on the axle?
2. I bought the brake lines that go with Cobra brakes. Is this correct? The hard line portion of the brake line looks good, but the soft line portion doesn't really have a place to connect.

Re: MS Cobra Brake progress with questions

My cousin has Steve's rear kit on her 64 1/2 we had custom hydraulic lines made for both front and rear brakes.

Re: MS Cobra Brake progress with questions

It appears you have a Versailles rear end, so the holes you are using are the correct ones.  I hope you are not planning on using those big flat washers you have on there once you finalize the assembly.

I prefer to not use the factory type cobra rear hoses.  See that hose laying on the floor?  Weld a bolt or a nut to the axle housing and bolt the hose bracket to that.  You can use a muffler clamp if you do not have a welder.  Similar to the pic of Ramses' GT rear brakes..

Re: MS Cobra Brake progress with questions

It is the Versaille rear end.
The washers were used to protect from scratching. My OCD kicks in like that.
If I don't use the Cobra specific brake lines, is there a better option. If all the need to do is clamp on, I can look at that.

Re: MS Cobra Brake progress with questions

Has anyone used a Plasma torch to cut off the retaining ring from the wheel bearings? Will it work without desroying the axle?

I wouldn't do that, not saying it wouldn't work but I always use an angle grinder with a cutting disc and then a hammer and a chisel to get the retaining ring and old bearing off.

Re: MS Cobra Brake progress with questions

Just want to confirm the rear brakes on the Versailles mount toward the rear of the car.  Also my rearend has 3/8 t bolts but it looks like I can use 1/2?  Since I am new will need to make a couple of post before I can upload pics.

Thanks Joey

Re: MS Cobra Brake progress with questions

If your rear end has the 3/8" T bolts, it will typically have the bolt pattern horizontal and not tilted like the Versailles pattern, which is rotated on the housing.  The COBRA-RLG brackets have a 3/8" set of holes with a rotated pattern that should match your bolt pattern.  The caliper goes behind the axle and should be angled up slightly, so if you are looking at the driver side, the caliper will reside at about the 2:00 Oclock position, assuming your bolt pattern is horizontal..

Re: MS Cobra Brake progress with questions

Mustang Steve, I had a friend help me with cutting and pressing on new bearings with your Cobra Brackets (same one in the pictures here), he was very impressed and wanted to know if they work on 8.8 rear ends. He has a Ford F-150 Lightning and wants discs on the back. I told him I would ask.

I just removed the bearings and retainers from my Lincoln Versailles to do MS's GT brake swap.  As you have discovered, there is not enough room to use a bearing separator due to the LV's bearing retainer/caliper bracket.  Instead, I just drilled a hole into the retainer with a diameter about 3/4 the width of the retainer, about 3/4 the way through.  Then I put a chisel across the hole and gave it a smack and the retainer split on the first try.  I used the LV's bearing retainer/caliper bracket to press off the bearing.

BTW - have you seen MS's other post about his problem getting the pinion angle right with the LV?  Is that something you're looking at as well?  I'm not quite there yet, myself.

Re: MS Cobra Brake progress with questions

Jkordzi I had never thought of drilling the retainer. I used a angle grinder with a thin metal blade and a chisel. As far as pinion issue, I have a Fatman front end kit on my car.

Well it's good you got it off, but I guess I'm not understanding your reference to your front end setup.  I was referring to MS's issue in getting the pinion angle on his Lincoln Versailles setup properly and was wondering if you had looked into that.

Re: MS Cobra Brake progress with questions

Sorry jkordzi I msread your question. I was thinking Pitman not Pinion. I have not looked into this. I guess I will have to look at what he sees as an issue.

Re: MS Cobra Brake progress with questions

When replacing that caliper, if you need the passenger side, you need a Left side cobra caliper. I switched them side-to-side on the Cobra conversion. (and all the other rear disc conversions, as well)

Re: MS Cobra Brake progress with questions

Steve I looked at the calipers and the left side says LH and the right side says RH on them. Do I have them installed wrong?

Re: MS Cobra Brake progress with questions

Hmmmm
Maybe that only came about with the 2005 and later versions. If bleeders are at the top and calipers are mounted to the rear of the axle you are good.
A good pic would help
