Does anyone know of a rear disk brake swap that can be done using an 8 inch rear end.... I will eventually have the axle's machined to make them 5 lug..... just don't want to change out the whole rear end
Thanks
Mike

umm are you sureyou have a 8" rear?? in 68 they didnt make a 8" 4 lug rear they did for mavericks in 70-73 and if you have one of those the regular rear disc swaps wont work because the axle flang bolt pattern is the same as the 7.25 rears.

I was told it was an 8 inch. How can I tell for sure

First, start with the spec's of your car:
-year
-body style
-engine
-trans
- 4 lug or 5 lug brakes

Quick and easy first check is to look at the center section under the car. If it has a cover plate bolted to the back, it is a 7.5. If the differential carrier bolts in from the front it is likely an 8" Based on the post above, if it is Maverick four-lug, standard disc conversions will not bolt up because of the axle flanges, etc. But before crossing that path, figure out what you actually have with a quick look under the car. If it is indeed a 7.5 four lug, you wisest money would be spend locating a five-lug 8" if you intend to go V8 at some point. A five-lug with drum brakes will be a wiser investment than putting discs on a rear end that you will scrap anyway. Why the need for discs now? What do you have up front? What wheels do you intend to run? This will determine the maxium rotor diameter and caliper combo that you can use that will still fit inside the wheel.
Here is a link that shows 7.5 and 8 assemblies and a nice looking 8" rebuild with drum brakes.

Thanks for the info..... As you might already be able to tell, I am a novice at this.... I recently upgraded to disk up front, the engine is out of the car but I am going to keep it a straight 6.... upgrading to a 250 head. so while the car is still in pieces and still need to fix the rear quarters, wheel wells and trunk extension, I figured I would do the rear brakes....

I put 92-95 crown vic/Town car/Grand Marquis on my 8".....do a little reasearch before you choose...the Mark-VII I've heard are a pain to adjust. The ones I've got was pretty easy to install, but I did have to fab some brackets and weld them in place. The Ebrake shoes on the set up I have are a real pain to remove/install I found out last night.

Just my opinion, whatever that is worth, that your money will be better spent for now rebuilding the drum brakes on your 7.5" rear. That minimal investment will make the car safe to drive and over time you can find a good 8" five-lug axle - and then look into a disc kit. Any brakes that you adapt for the 7.5 will likely not transfer over to the 8". The PO either led you astray on the rear or didn't know themselves.

From the picture, it is definitely NOT an 8" rear. I would not spend another $5 on that rearend. They are known to be very weak and parts for them are scarce. You can find a good used 5 lug 8" rear end for a very reasonable price. One from a 67-70 Mustang or Cougar will fit perfectly. Then take a look at the MustangSteve COBRA-RSM rear disc brake conversion or the GT2008-RSM conversion. It bolts up to ay 8" or 9" rear end. You must have at least 15" wheels.

The rear end you have pictured is the stock 7.25" 4-lug rear end for a six cylinder Mustang. While bulky to carry around, they do make good boat anchors.
The '84-'90 Mk VII ventilated 11.25" rear rotors will require at least 15" diameter wheels to fit over them.
The setup pictured in link below is from a '94-'04 SN95 V-6 Mustang (GT rear discs from same year models are also the same). They are solid 10.5" rotors and will fit inside stock Mustang 14" wheels. --larger diameter wheels would obviously not be a problem. This setup is mounted on an 8-inch rear end in a '65 fastback with 16" Torque Thrust IIs.
There are also other options availble on the internet from various companies.

a 8" rear end will look like this forgiving of course that this one is a 4 lug maverick axle you will want one out of a car that mustang steve has laid out. other then the 4 lug bolt pattern and disc brakes. this is what you are looking for.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
