a couple of irrating issues & a new product request

Hey all,

Driving the '66 coupe daily now has inspired me to fix the little things that are annoying.  Could use a little help.

1- door hing on drivers side door does not have the catch pin for the catch to catch on to keep the door from swinging out to far.  Anyone have a DIY fix for this?  My door hinges are in good shape so I don't want to replace it if I don't have to.

2- my single does not automatically switch off when turing left but does when turning right.  This is brand new and I haven't looked at it just yet, but when I do what should I be looking for?  Will this take a whole assumbly to be replaced?

3- Wide Open Throttle from the line makes a racket almost like there isn't any power.  I have to let off the gas for the motor to smooth out.  then go back to the floor.  I've read a few things on this.  I'm wondering if its bogging down with the traction lock, the lower gear, and the traction bars.  I was thinking maybe I needed larger jets in the primaries on the carb?  I'm sure this will take a while to sort out.

4- Is it bad form to install new door and window seals on a car that still needs body and paint?  Just wondering if it would be worth it.  i've got a whistling window and from what I can see, its from the seals being old and brittle and just not sealing any more.

Product Request:
I would like to have some sort of illuminated plate maybe with leds or something for the heater controls on the dash.. When its night time i can't see the conrols and half the time I can't remember which way is hot and cold on the temp slider.  Just a thought.  It would be nice to have.  Ramse, something you can whip up?

On number 3.........Have you put lighter advance springs in the distrib? Brings in the TOTAL timing quicker. With a degree tape on the balancer you want to set timing to a TOTAL timing of 36 degrees@ 2000rpm. Makes a HUGE difference on take off. (Donald Trump would say.."it is you-ge")

no.  I'm pretty distrubutor dumb.. I've got an electronic system under there and have the timing set to about 14-15 degress before tdc.. What do I need to know and check to look into this spring thing?

Re: a couple of irrating issues & a new product request

Door hinge fix:
Remove the hinge
Plug weld a washer to the top of the broken stud.
Weld a 2 or 3" long bolt to the washer.  5/16" bolt works best.  Weld the head of the bolt to the washer.
Put a 9/16" deep socket over the bolt so the threads stick through the socket.
Place washer and nut on the exposed threads and tighten the nut.
It will pull the broken stud out of the hole.

Now for reassembly.
VERY IMPORTANT:  Make sure the shoulder on the new stud is slightly longer than the new roller that goes on it.  If it is not, grind some off the roller.  The roller needs to be able to rotate freely when the stud is fully pressed in.   Grease it prior to assembly.

that is awesome!  but it appears that there is 'no roller stud' there to remove.  I'll have to look closer.. maybe its broken off and I'm not seeing the broken piece yet.

Re: a couple of irrating issues & a new product request

#2 - The turn signal cam under the steering wheel probably has one of the canceling arms broken off. There is a pin that sticks below the steering wheel that will cancel the signal when you pass center. You would need to replace the entire mechanism. Once you have the wheel off, it should take about 30 minutes to 1 hour to replace the entire thing and reassemble the plug.

#3 - I have the same problem. My advance plate sticks in my distributer and sometimes when I take off it is stuck in full advance and will ping like crazy with any sort of load on the engine. You have too much timing there and you are experiencing detonation.  If the rest of the time the timing seems fine, you could either live with it, or dive in a figure out what is going on.  You would need to plot the timing curve first to see what is going on.

#4 - if it is bothering you, replace the seals. You will have to rip them off and replace them when you paint, but they are not too expensive. Enjoying your car is priority #1!

Product request: The heater sliders are difficult to deal with. They don't really make sence, but that is how they had to do it if you look at the heater box.  I have driven quite a few newer rental cars that have an LED light in the headlener that shines down an subtly lights the console area. Since the heater controls are a solid piece of letal and carving out the letters so you could back light it would be a bear... Why not have a white LED pointing towards the controls from the shifter area?
