paint thickness

I was at my buddy's bodyshop the other day with my 65.  I have been watching him redo a 67 GTO that was restored 20 years ago. it was a mess.  I'm not kidding you the bondo on the roof was 3/8" thick covering the rust holes.
He had a paint rep bring in a paint thickness meter. they shot the roof and it would even register!!  there were lots of places it shot in the 30s.
During or discussion he said hey lets shoot your fastback!  He wasnt the one who restored it so he was just dying to shoot it!  We went out and shot probably 20 different places on the car and it average6 to 8 mil in most places, where the stripes are were obviously higher since the white stripes were painted over the blue.  the only other place where it shot higher was the roof,  the reason for this was the roof is the only origional panel left.  In short he was disappointed not to find readings in the 30s .
we then shot a new car he had and it averager 5 to 6 mil!

Re: paint thickness

Terry, just curious, you mention 30s, 6 to 8 mil and 5 to 6 mil but how thick is that translated into inches or mm:s?

Re: paint thickness

Mil:  stands for thousands of an inch.  or .001  = 1 mil   if that explains it better.

If multiple things can go wrong, the one that will go wrong will be the one that causes the most damage.

Re: paint thickness

Doesn't  .0001 = 1/10,000th?

.1 = 1 tenth
.01 = 1 hundredth
.001 = 1 thousandth
.0001 = 1 ten thousandth

Re: paint thickness

Googled it:

"Derived from the Latin "mille" (one thousand), the measurement unit "mil" is defined as "one-thousandth of an inch." Due to this minuscule size, mils have become popular units for measuring the thicknesses of film, plastic sheets, foil, and paper. Similarly, automotive engineers have adopted mils to describe the tolerances of head gaskets and other engine parts. Fortunately, calculating the millimeter or inch thickness of an object measured in mils requires only simple arithmetic."

Which when I think about makes perfect sence since a millimeter is one-thousanth of a meter.

Uh, it was 5 am.  Put in 1 too many zeros.  You are correct.  And my post will be corrected
