How can I distinguish original interiors from repro?

By data plate my 66 coupe has the correct interior.  It is white/aqua pony as it should be.  When I bought the car I ws told the interior is an original 66 interior but it came from a donor  car in the 80s when it under sent a partial restoration.

A friend of mine says based on the type of thread used he believes it to be a repro kit from California Mustang.  All I really care about is that it looks good and it does for the most part but so that I know more about what's original on my car I would like to know what to lookifor so that I am sure about what's what on my car.

Re: How can I distinguish original interiors from repro?

Typically, if the seams are split in the seat bottom, the upholstery is original.  In reality, if you have a TMI replacement interior, it is going to be much better quality than the original was when it was new.

We are talking a 47 year old car here.  Any vinyl upholstery that has been around through that many Texas summers is going to be either worn out, or it will be shortly after you begin using it.  If you are going to drive the car and enjoy it, having a replacement interior is a blessing and something you do not have to upgrade after you buy it.  If you want a concours original car that you are going to place in a museum and never drive it again, then you will be very lucky if you can find an original interior car.

If your interior looks like the first one below, I can tell you for certain it is NOT original to the car.  The second pic shows some 69 seats in a 66, with the seats in condition that would be expected in a car that has actually been driven since 69.

Re: How can I distinguish original interiors from repro?

I don't care about concourse correct.  My goal is to resto mod but retain the original flavor.
That being said,  does that mean I should get rid of my velour captains chair? It is the right colors ;)

Actually mine does have the same seam separation on the back of the driver seat and the place where the white and aqua meet on the lower are standing to come apart. I was told the car ws restored and then garaged. At the time of resto the odometer was reset. It had about 7k miles on it last year when I got it.   Been enjoying it.  Have about 17 now.

The VIN will tell you if it had deluxe or standard interior.  The door tag will tell you what color interior.  You just have to make it he way you want it.
