What's the difference?

Same function, cable is insulated and usually round, strap is flat woven braid uninsulated.

A pal of mine is a whiz-bang electrical dude(not BB..another bud) He sez the wide braided wire is BEST for grounding. Something to do with the electrons flowing...er sumethin. I nodded off while he was giving me the theroy.

Throttle cables do NOT! make good grounding straps. They give off too much smoke.

Once you let the smoke out it sure is hard to put back in.

Sal, I bet your buddy was referring to those old school grounding straps: an inch wide and a quarter inch thick. Yeah I bet that's a good ground. Your buddy was telling you that the electricity runs on the surface of the wire, not inside it. The more wire strands, the more surface area, the better the electricity flows.
Thanks DC for reminding us that we should ALWAYS replace the engine grounding cable when we have to take it off to work on the engine.
