Hi all,
I have a bunch of parts for my 289 "C" code engine on the way:
- Trick Flow 170 head with 61cc chamber, will be decked and compression set around 9.2-9.5
- Comp Cams XE268H
- Weiand stealth intake manifold
- JBA 2.25" full sustem (installed)
- Autolite 4100
I ordered the Autolite with 1.12 (600 CFM) venturi, but I was just wondering if I will be just wasting my fuel with 600CFM Autolite, should I go 1.08 venturi (480 CFM) instead? I can still exchange my carburetor before everything leaves the country on my way. Please help decide whether to stick with 1.12 or get a 1.08 instead.
Thanks in advance

I have ran both size Autolites (GREAT CARBS), I loved my 480 cfm on my stock 289, great throtle response. With the other upgrades that you have planned for the motor, I would run the 600cfm, I ran my 480 on a 5.0 block with better heads (AFR's) and cam and headers, and at about 4000 rpm's it went flat. I traded the 480 for a 600 (1.12) and it pulled strong all the way to 6500 rpms. I was running a 3.73 rear gear and 5 speed. The 600 did not seem to give up anything on the lower end.

Uwiik, sounds like you will have a pretty nice combination. On the 4100, I am curious where you are getting it. It is not one of those things commonly found on the parts shelf these days and there are things that you want to be aware of when using the 1.12 carb on the SBF.
IMHO, there is nothing better than a well matched 4100. They are reliable, simple to work on and with their annular discharge, very economical and responsive.
Here is a link that may be of interest to you. It is basically all about 4100's.

When running that cam..... unless you have 3.55:1 or better gears I would advance it a few degrees to get the power range down lower on the RPM scale.
Also...like I posted earlier...."cammed-up" SBF engines respond really well with LOTS of initial. Cleans up the idle...solves "the idles too rich" problem.
For example..modify your distrib to have ALL the advance in by 36*.(lighter advance springs from Mr. Gasket/Summit) Adjust timing to approx. 24* initial 12* mechanical.
You will need to "play with it" to suit your combination.
Made a HUGE difference in my set-up.

Thanks for the great responses guys! Put my mind to ease knowing I ordered the right part. I bought the carbs from www.gottafishcarb.com, He's got an Ebay shop too and frequently stocks some really rare stuff such as original number Hipo carb.
Judging from how my current Autolite 2100 works against some older Holley found here, I am sure I made the right decision going Autolite instead of Holley or Edelbrock.
I am planning to go 3.55 from 2.79 I currently have (ha ha I know), but I just need to rob more banks to recoup the cash I drowned in this money pit called Mustang, the shipping cost and exorbitant 40% tax on top just does it to me.......3.55 along with limited slip is on the list of next upgrade. Thank you very much for the tips on tuning, so much appreciated. Do you have any particular tuning recommendation for my particular super wimpy gear?

I personally spoke with John Enyeart befoire his untimely passing and he told me that a 1.08 , 4100 was the perfect carb for my wasmed up 331.
Alas I sold it before I tried a swap.
I am now running a 65 Holly Street Avenger with good results.
I really like the specs and feed back on the Summit Street and Strip carbs.

I am trying to make as "stock" looking as possible, hence the Autolite 4100 choice.

Holly carbs are stock on Fords, what does not look right on a Mustang is a Edelbrock/Carter carb!

Does Holley Street Avenger looks exactly like Holley 4150? I never see street avenger in real life. I know Holley 4150 is stock on Mustang but was put away by some negative review of 4150. I originally had my eyes on street avenger and sure the reviews on street avenger are glorious but I was doubting the look on vintage and was steered to Autolite 4100 because of everyone's review, and sure it looks really nice on vintage.
Actually there are a lot of Holley 4150 lying around collecting dust in my friends workshop, they sat there being neglected replaced by edelbrocks. I actually was thinking about making use of that neglected Holley 4150 since I can get it for free, but had no idea about optimizing it and what to look for.

Kar,
what intake are you using with the 4100??
Offline
With the 480 cfm 1.08 - Stock Ford cast iron
With the 600 cfm 1.12 - Weiand Stealth
I ended up going to a Quick Fuel 650 Mechanical secondaries, great carb for the performance guy that wants to tinker all the time, but I miss the Autolite, I put it on, set it once and forgot about it. The Quick Fuel carb has a much harder hit when you put your foot in it, it just doesn't seem to stay set where you want it.

Here is what the Summit street/strip carb looks like on my 393.

The Summit carb is pretty interesting for a cheapo of questionable origin. Found this thorough review on another forum, good read.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
