Power brake booster hitting master

Ordered booster cardone 54-74000 per MS instructions. 2000 mustang v6 master cylinder reservoir hit the booster before master is seated against booster. I went back to rock auto site to look at the pics on their site of the booster I ordered. Booster pic on their site looks different. It does not show an indentation on the booster face where the master bolts up, which the pics I included shows the one they sent clearly does. This indentation would cause my problem if it is not supposed to be there. The master cyl. would go back that distance. The booster does not measure 9 inches in diameter , more like 8 inches. It does have the right bolt pattern , master will bolt up if I flip the reeservoir around 180 degrees. This would make the top of the reservoir very unevenly sloped.
Is this the right booster? Are there variations or did they send me the wrong booster. No part or model number stamped on booster. Don't see a phone number for rock auto. Any help appreciated.
Car is 1966 mustang, c4 , 302. originally manual brakes.

Re: Power brake booster hitting master

I ran into the same problem, it's a shot in the dark ordering one from anywhere but MustangSteve.  Having the same part number, there are versions like you have pictured and others that have a "flat face" that's NOT recessed like the one you have pictured.  The flat face one is the one you want.  After failed attempts to order one locally, I scoured the local salvage yards and found a good one.  If you want to save the hassle and time, order one direct from MustangSteve, it will be the correct one.

Re: Power brake booster hitting master

I callled cardone. It is an 83-86 ranger  booster. They call it a conversion part. Evidently they just send you whatever booster they have that they think will work for the 80's mustang, really? Rock Auto s***s, when explained  to them they wanted me to pay shipping  back and eat the initial shipping. Called my local Autozone, they had 2 in stock, both had different detents which means , who no knows what they were off of.

Re: Power brake booster hitting master

There are many different configurations of the 54-74000 booster.  They are now using many different similarly shaped cores to build up the 54-74000.  Main reason is some guy in Texas keeps selling all they can build without providing any cores.
I can provide flat front boosters.  The originals I started selling many years ago also had the recess.  I have seen many, many different ones and I never know what cardone will come up with.  I have my new ones that are guaranteed to be NO recess, and I have some cardone rebuilts that I think do not have the recess.

Re: Power brake booster hitting master

One solution might be to add a 1/4" shim, if that is enough to cure the problem.  But, you must ALSO shim inside the round bore so the seal is held positively in place, or it will leak.

On one car, I used some heated steel plate to form the rear of the reservoir so it would clear the booster.  Use aluminum foil around the tank to keep it from sticking.  The tank can be easily reshaped, but there is risk doing this.  Don't overdo the heat and it works great.  Heat too much and you get to buy a new tank.
