help with engine dipsticks

MY 67 289 had an older triangular shaped deep sump milodon oil pan. I have tried several times to modify my and other dipstick tubes to get the correct length. I now have oil in pan , 9 qts., so I dont want to drain just yet.  I broke down and bought the flexible ss dipstick assembly that milodon had listed for this pan. When I get this thing, I notice that the braided ss tube is about and inch shorter than stock and the dipstick (which is literally a piece of ss welding rod attached to a billet handle) is about an 1 1/2" shorter than stock dipstick. How is this goona work on a pan that is an inch or two deeper than stock?  Needless to say, I am sending back.  Has anyone found an aftermarket dipstick that will work nicely on 289/302 that go through timing covers and have a deep sump pan?  I have seen lokar ones that are similar and knockoff one that are similar that are half the price as well?  any suggestions?  ...trying hard not to do my roscoe p coltrane impersonation with all this talk of dipsticks.

Well, the DEPTH of the pan has absolutely NOTHING TO DO with the dipstick length !
If you use a stock dipstick and tube, the oil level will read correct when full.


Money you enjoy wasting is NOT wasted money... unless your wife finds out.

I understand that as well as the trimming of the tube to get the full level on stock dipstick in the proper range, as the oil level sits a little lower in the aftermatket pan.  My secondary concern was that when oil was low and also  with the aftermarket dipstick, which is supposed to work with their pans, the tip of the new stick would barely touch the oil. Guess I need to do some more measuring. Just don't want to install, until I am sure it is gonna work properly.

Id change the oil with the filter run it and then see where it sits.   Mabe you could trim the tube down to lower it a bit.
