Rear spring wrap on acceleration

Took my 66 to the dragstrip a couple of weeks ago. Leaving the line I had massive wheel spin, then about half way through 1st gear the tires hooked up and there was two loud bangs as I continued thru first. I couldn't really feel anything corresponding to the noise(first gear is over very quickly). I've seen several people talking about spring wrap and was wondering if that is what this could be.

Re: Rear spring wrap on acceleration

Alan,
Spring wrap usuall results in wheel hop; as the, wraps up tires grab some, hop, release spring wrap and the cycle continues. Wheel hop should be felt in the drive line.
So were the bangs accompanied by somethng felt in the drive line??

If it ain't broke, I haven't modified it Yet

Re: Rear spring wrap on acceleration

Couldn't really tell Corky. I had a passenger taking a video but her cameras battery died about 4 1/2 seconds into the run. Don't know if you can tell anything from the audio. I was on the rev limiter at the top of first gear.

Re: Rear spring wrap on acceleration

I just had a thread on this.. this sounds exactly like my problem.. wheel spin the huge bang sound.. I have stiff 4.5 mid eye springs with poly bushings so no wheel hope but i still have axle wrap.. since I built my car to handle too I'm saving for the Cal trac units.. but if u aren't built for handling u have many cheaper options

Re: Rear spring wrap on acceleration

I couldn't really tell what the noise was.  However, the shock to the driveline from wheel hop can be severe.  I strongly suggest traction bars, or some other way to control it before you're dealing with breakage of some component in the drivetrain.

Re: Rear spring wrap on acceleration

You might want to check your engine/tranny mounts after that, just to be sure nothing broke loose there.
