Painting plastic interior parts

Want some opinions, my 73 Mach 1 has the two tone blue interior, in decent shape. The normal items need to be replaced:
front seat covers
carpet
door panels
and the console needs to be painted (color worn off armrest)
The dashpad has already been replaced, but with a black one.

I would like to change the interior color to black, for these reasons:
can always get replacement parts to match
can paint the exterior any color I want
does not fade
Black parts are cheaper than those of color

I know black is hot but I am going to have AC

Have any of you painted the interior plastic parts with success, the painted parts that would take the most abuse are the console, and the rear quarter panels, the rest of the parts should never be touched once installed.

When I had my 65 fastback restored, they painted white rear quarters blue with a interior paint.  Problem is it scratches very easy and the white shows thru!
I called the paint company and they felt he didnt prep the surface correctly.  You would think a body man would know how to prep fiberglass!!

I'm not sure of the brand of paint but will check shortly.  Best advice is contact the paint company and follow their directions to the letter

Re: Painting plastic interior parts

SEM makes interior paint, I have used the vinyl/leather paint to change some bucket seats from tan to black and they look like they came from the factory that color.  They make a plastic paint also but I've never tried it. It's sold at Eastwood, good stuff.

Re: Painting plastic interior parts

thanks for the input guys, like everything when it comes to paint, it's all about the prep work.

I am trying to make sure this is what I want  to do, I am trying to look things over to determine what I will need to replace vs recolor if I change to black or stay blue.

Re: Painting plastic interior parts

My white console was painted black in 1993, using rustoleum 7777 satin black.  It still shown no issues today.  I also painted the interior quarter panels on the fastback.  They were blue, and I repaintd with the same 7777 paint.  For prep, I cleaned everything very thoroughly wioth COMET cleanser and a mildly abrasive scotch brite pad.  The quarters stil are not scratched and I travel with this car, so it gets abuse.

I like the rustoleum because it does not get hard and brittle like Krylon.  That gives it alot of resistance to getting scraped or scratched.

Re: Painting plastic interior parts

SEM Color Coat is what I used recently on my little "parts getter".
Installed a grey console from an Olds and sprayed it with above...following EZ directions.
Pretty Maroon color now. Suppose to be specifically made for plastic. Stretchs and shrinks with temp changes.
Sherwin/Williams had it here in Charleston.

Re: Painting plastic interior parts

This is why I love this site, everytime I decide to try something or do somethin alittle different, there is at least one person, or several that have done it and can send you in the right direction. I hope over time i am able to help someone as I have been helped. I have just been fooling with these older Mustangs for about ten years (Fox bodies are new cars), but between the 66, 68, and now the 73 Mach, I am learning everyday.

I have said it before, but I am thankful for a forum that my eleven year old son can read and discuss with me.

Thanks Guys, and look forward to meeting a bunch of you in September,
