Its getting hot

Hey all,

Currently my '66 is a daily driver for me.  I've got the power brakes all done and things are pretty good.  Its getting  hot out side and I was thinking a/c would be nice.  Who has a/c and how well does it work?  Is it factory?  I don't have it currently and was thinking about one of those kits.  Suggestions and advice wanted.

Thanks
Richard.

Re: Its getting hot

My 66 has always had a setup I cobbled together in 1993.  It performed perfectly until Mastercraft worked on my car, destroying the condenser.  It consisted of an original 66 underdash unit, an aftermarket condenser, an inline dryer, some custom hoses and a York aluminum compressor.  Right before the Florida BASH trip, the york finally crapped out, so I installed a Sanden .  It has been runing happily on R-12 right up until the mastercrap fiasco.  I still have four cans of R-12. so I have to decide whether to go back R-12 or go ahead and convert it, since I will be buying a new condenser anyway.

In town, the underdash unit will freeze you out.  It is less effective on the highway due to leakage around the windows at high speed, but the unit is still making cold air.  Only drawback of this type system is there is no connection between AC and DEFROST mode.  When we were coming through Arkansas, coming home from the Illinois bash, I had the AC going as well as the defroster blowing to keep the windshield clear during some pesky rain in the mountains.

If you consider an aftermarket unit, find out how hard the thing blows and how much noise it makes before purchasing.

Money you enjoy wasting is NOT wasted money... unless your wife finds out.

Re: Its getting hot

The Classic Auto Air "Perfect Fit" works great in my 68. Straight forward installation with excellent customer support. Hot air, cold air, defrost with very good air volume, uses stock controls. The newest model has all electronic functions.
The only thing I did not care for was the compressor mount that I tossed in favour of a billet one that I made.
It gets an "A+" on the RRR. ( Rudi's Retrofit Rating) ;)

Oh yeah, I almost forgot, its not loud

Re: Its getting hot

IF I ever get AC I will look real hard at the new units that go completely under/inside the dash. I don't like the old style which intails cutting part of my console away. Seen'm at swap meet/car shows and according to the sales man its a bolt-right-in deal.

Hey Sal, thats what the CAA "perfect Fit" a/c is.
The old heater and air box is removed and replaced with a whole new one is put in its place.

Re: Its getting hot

Rudi, I'm glad to hear from someone that has experience with the CAA setup.  My son and I went to a carshow last weekend in Denton. It was an open house for RSS restoration shop. We weren't there 10 minutes when asked if we were interested in filling out a FREE raffle ticket. I said sure, even though I never when anything. The last drawing was for a $1200 gift certificate to Classic Auto Air and we WON!

Re: Its getting hot

My beef with after-market HVAC systems....

None that I have seen or read about allow the induction of fresh air.  They all seem to be "re-circulate" only.  Now, I understand that this may not be a big problem way down south where there is more water in the air than air and the outside temp is approaching BROIL.

But up here  where normal people live, we like a little fresh air and do not routinely run the AC and Heat in Re-Circ mode.

So...Once again, I find myself having  to build what I want cause I can't buy it.  Got the parts from Nostalgic Air Parts...some have reported trouble with these guys but I've  had real good luck with them...and I'm building an HVAC system that takes fresh air from the right top hat or will re-circ cabin air.  It will be controlled from the stock 66 heater controls and will only require the addition of a button & 12V vac servo to control the re-circ function.

It's all designed and the parts are all cut from ABS sheet.  Getting it assembled is one of my projects while the car is  in the paint shop.

I'll keep ya posted.

Re: Its getting hot

are all the systems like that?  I haven't looked at them yet.  I'm scared of the price.
