Morning Folks,
I’m looking for some feedback. Several answers will be “it’s your car, do as you want!!”. I realize this is subjective and goes more to preference, but I am having a hard time “seeing” the finished product.
67 mustang coupe. The exterior of the car has been painted Lime Gold and now the interior needs some paint. An all-black interior will not make the cut, for me it turns into a void. I'm not wild about the original two tone green either.
Picture this as option 1 - parchment interior color on grained metal on doors and door panel, rear quarter trim, kick panels, metal on dash, knee pad, seats, floor console, headliner, upper console, sun visors and steering column with black carpet and black dash pad. Deluxe interior trim across dash and door panel.
Option 2 – exterior lime gold green on grained metal of doors and rear quarter trim panels. Parchment on door panel, kick panels, metal on dash, knee pad, seats, floor console, headliner, upper console, sun visors and steering column with black carpet and black dash pad. Deluxe interior trim across dash and door panel.
Option 3 same as 2 with exterior green added to dash and steering column.
Does anyone have pictures to post on interiors that use the exterior color (doesn’t have to be green) on the interior metal of the doors? And dash?
I know that the interior painted steel colors were always different than the exterior of the Mustang and I don't understand why. I've had several trucks between the 60s,70s, and 90s that were Ford's and the interior and exterior body color matched. Anybody care to explain??

I have an 06 mustang in Legend lime, it has a tan leather interior. Not sure the exact color name. I would be happy to take some pics if you want to see.
I know legend lime derived from lime gold but not sure how close it is to what you are painting.

Terry,
Pictures of your interior would be great.
Here is a pic of the fender. The colors are very close.

Just me but I'd avoid white on the seats - too hard to keep clean. I also don't think that you'd want more than 2 colors in there - it looks busy and cobbled together (to me).
I think the black carpet and black dash pad would look out of place in any of the alternatives you list. What about a black carpet, seats, dash pad and door inserts, with either lime gold, parchment or saddle for the metal on the dash and doors? Alternatively, I think that the saddle and lime gold would work well together (but without the black).
Do you have an upholstery shop nearby? They might be able to loan you some swatches that you can use to help you see the colors better.
You should also know that I have horrible color sense.

I was thinking the same about it being busy. For me I think the dash would look nice matching up with the doors. As for the carpet it might be okay black. You should be able to find interior pictures online with a google search.

I left this full size to help you see it better.

yup, plus lite tan seats is ok in the seats and vinyl door oanels and looks elegant . . dark tan would look out of place and it would overwhelm the lite exterior color.

.
Just do a 66 green white pony interior color combo or something similar . . use the stainless in place of the wood grain or just but 68 wood grain door panels and dash bezels.
The green carpet mounts on the lower half of the 66 kick panels which you can use so it matches the green on the door.

PLEASE, OH PLEASE, DO NOT use exterior gloss paint on the interior of your doors and quarters. I see that done so often and it shouts I AM WRONG !!!!! FIX ME !!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE BODY SHOP RAN OUT OF MASKING TAPE !!!!!!!!
When I am looking at Mustangs to buy, and I see that stuff, I go on to the next one because it is so much trouble to remove it.
Now, it is YOUR CAR... etc...

Yes, but at least it didn't run out of paint.
Hi...my name is Earl Scheib and I'll paint any car or family pet for only $19.95 . . This low low price includes the windows, bumpers, and interior at no extra cost . . Heck, I'll even throw in the tires and tail pipe for free . . Why you ask...simple, because I'm Earl Scheib...
BONUS FEATURE - We will even wash your car prior to paint for the additional low low price of only $1.95.

hey bolted to floor . . if you want, they can paint the interior parts with the same base they use on the exterior then go over it with a matte finish if you don't want it shiny . . also, if you use green vinyl, i would get it from distinctive not tmi . . most tmi Colors suck BAD . . the exterior paint will not match exactly so you can get paint to match the vinyl if you want too.
If you need new seat foam buy it from NPD and get AMERICAN CUSTOM CUSHIONS brand.

Thanks for the input guys. We did get it all worked out. We will go with the parchment with a matte/flat clear.
Terry, the pictures of your car helped. Mine will wind up a little lighter in color than your 06. I will get some pictures up of the interior when it’s painted.
John Ha you are not the only one with a bad color sense. I have told folks for years that I work well with pictures. Are you taking applications for the Perpetually Bewildered Society? I might make a good candidate!!

Steve, no worries here. The body shop guy is a Mustang nut and will not allow that. If body color went to the interior, it would have been a matte or flat clear.
Barnett, I will look into Distinctive for the interior. Talking with some of the Mustang parts vendors, I am told that there were interior parts of the same color but different shades on the cars from the factory. Apparently Ford could not get a good match either. I wasn’t around then to be able to remember them as new!!!!
All of the Earl Scheib commercials I remember are “I’ll paint any car for $99.95.” Seems like there was a stogie in there somewhere.

i have orig nos pieces of colored interior amd the color varies a bit from dye lot to dye lot . . same thing with material today . . distinctive has the best colors by far . . tmi's colors are drab and lifeless, but tmi has the best sewing . . distinctive used to and they are still decent but tmi is more consistent, so in show stuff, i send distinctive vinyl or orig vinyl to tmi and have them sew the covers.
also, the round binding that distinctive uses is larger than the orig and tmi uses the orig size which i prefer but since the color is the most obvious thing one notices, i would use the distinctive vinyl irregardless.
i also paint the kick panels with the same paint i use on the door frames so they match perfectly . . these are a few tips on how to have a killer matching interior and win shows.

You know, winning shows hasn't really crossed my mind. All I ever wanted was a car I could bang second gear in and go down the road. I think it will be nice when he gets done with the paint and trim. I will have to be careful as I complete the assemble.

well if you didn't want it nice i doubt you would be going thru this effort . . it will cost you the same if you buy distinctive seat covers . . it will cost aroiund 150.00 for the material from distinctive if you buy it and give it to tmi to sew up.
the kick panels are maybe $25.00 to paint if you have your painter do it .
if you paint the door frames green buy the 65 - 66 panels and kick panel carpet kit and kick panel stainless trim if you want it to lok like the photos i posted.

Mustang Steve is right on the gloss, I used Dupont exterior base coat ford denim blue on the dash and no clear coat on the suggestion of my paint supplier, worked like a dream ended up with a semi gloss finish that matces the original paint. Jobber told me its not as UV protective without the clear but should hold up well on an interior.
