Question about exhaust pipe size

About to drive my mustang for the first time in 4 years!!!! Well got a quote from the local exhaust shop to build me a system. I've already got Flowmaster 40's that I'm taking up there. Anyways, he gave me a quote for 2.5 inch pipe and 2.25 pipe. Is there a really benefit that I will see or here with going to 2.5 inch pipe? Or can I save that money and spend it elsewhere?

Re: Question about exhaust pipe size

No noticeable benefit from going to 2.5vs2.25. 2.25 is easier to bend around axle and stuff. MAY be a little more noise with the 2.5.....for some of us that's a good thang. If it less$$ with the 2.25........I'd go that way. Save money for a big roller!

Re: Question about exhaust pipe size

Ditto what 6sally6 said.  It will be alot less hassle having 2.25" pipes on the car.

Re: Question about exhaust pipe size

Thanks guys. And yes it's about $70 cheaper to go with 2.25 pipe. I know that might not be a lot, but for me it is. Thanks. Ill post some pics when I get her on the road and running. So excited!!!

Re: Question about exhaust pipe size

I ran a comparison with 2-1/4 and 2-1/2 and had better lap times with the 2-1/4 from my headers back. I am not running any mufflers, but have side exhaust with both pipes exiting just in front of the right rear wheel. It looks like the 2-1/2 gives a better peak HP number, but the 2-1/4 looks to have more area under the curve. This means the torque is more usable through the mid range where I spend most of my time. I like the sound of the bigger pipes, but I'll go for the lap times. I am looking to get one of those dynamometer units that mounts to the tranny tail shaft so I can get a better comparison on stuff like this.

Re: Question about exhaust pipe size

MS yer gonna have to change your tune with that 427 sroker. I use a OTS 2.5  Stainless Magnaflow.
Most muffler shops don't use manderal bend pipes and the loose ID in the bends.
However is prolly about as usefull as slotted discs. In the real world not so much more than looks.

Re: Question about exhaust pipe size

The only reasion I would consider going with the bigger pipe is if and only if you planned on putting in a bigger engine some time in the future.  For the 289 2.25" is perfect.  If you plan on putting a 351 or somthing bigger in the future you may want to consider the larger pipe.

If it isn't broken...modify it anyway! http://www.DazeCars.com https://galaxieforum.boardhost.com
