    Front coil springs

    Ok- did i screw up! Completed a front suspension overhaul of my 65 Mustang/289/manual/PS. New open tracker uppers, Moog lowers, Moog springs, bushings and tie rods both side. Also did Shelby drop. When vehicle taken down off of jacks, car lowered 3 #%^* inches. The springs were standard replacement for 65 stand, but have a spring rate of 259. Did I mess up with putting to weak of a spring?  Car is now at an alignment shop and I will need to make a decision to replace springs before alignment.  Thanks for advice and go ahead a flame away.

    you did not screw up . . your springs are simply too short or far less than 259 lbs.

    i would get springs from detroit spring or 480 rate springs so you can set the height to where you want it more easily . . some dual rate springs may also work..

    you may be able to install a spring spacer with those springs but i doubt it.

    Through the years and many sets of front springs on various cars, I have found the ones that work best are made by Progressive Motorsports.  They are 6566GT progressive rate springs.  I have been buying them through Dr Gas.

    They will work great with Shelby drop to give your car a very nice stance.  I do not know what tires you have, but the 225x45/17 tire sits right even with the top of the fender opening.  They will start out a little higher but will settle about 1/2" with 6 months of driving.

    Money you enjoy wasting is NOT wasted money... unless your wife finds out.

    Steve on the spring note. What leafs are you running out back? that stance is perfect in the pic don't change it.

    That is a pretty car, hope you get it back together soon.

    Thanks for the info. When I drove the vehicle to the alignment shop, the front wheels were way out of whack this was through visual. Hopeing after alignment it stands up some. Also put new leafs and shocks 2 months ago which made rear sit up higher.  seeing the front lower than the rear, well was quite a shock as my car had the old rear end lowered look. I will wait and see what alignment guy has to say before any decision to replace springs. I double checked the spring I installed, which was a Moog 8088 spring which was a factory replacement spring for 65 mustang v-8. Steve your car looks great.

    a 259 lb spring is NOT a factory replacement for a 65 thru 66 mustang, plus it is an aftermarket spring so i wouldn't be surprised at all if it is not correct.

    MOOG makes good stuff but their springs are always WAY too long.  I would be removing those...

    I have edelbrock so called 1.5" drop springs smaller coil insulators which give another inch drop.  I think the 1.5" drop on the coils in an under statement it was more like 2 or 2.5" drop just with those alone. After about 80 miles driven in them the front suspension as loosened up a bit I love the way my car rides.  I purchased those coils back when oriley was checker. They should still be able to order them though.  It was a good deal to.  It was only like 89 for the set.

      Hey MS,  Did you cut your front coil springs?    What springs are you running on the back?  What Shocks are your running?  Thanks!  Steve69
