Got my 65 mustang/289/3 speed back from alignment shop. After new front end rebuild, Shelby drop I thought I had wrong springs installed. After alignment, all turned out well. Drop was 3/4 inch. My concern was just exaggerated because with the wheels were out of castor bad and that caused the front end to have an exaggerated lowering. Anyway, Alignment guy said he could not get a reading to start with but managed to get it aligned well. thanks for all advise. New question is this: have Low cost front shocks as in KYB/Excel. the new ride is much smoother and I am just weekend country road driver. What would be the benefit of upgrading to Koni or Some other high powered brand?. Would it make any major difference?

Last summer I rebuilt the front suspension on my 65. I took out some shocks the PO had installed. The blue paint was nice & shiny, but there was no dampening in the shocks. No fluid either. From what I understand, longevity is what you will get out of the pricier shocks. I would like to think the improvement I see is a combo of all the new stuff (including the Bilsteins) and a decent alignment.
Speaking of alignment, there are better specs for cars with the uca drop, than the 1965 specs. After my front end work, I had an alignment done. I got a print out that showed it was set to factory specs (despite my giving the shop the specs I wanted) the car drove terrible, and would not return to center. I found an old school alignment guy that aligned it properly, and it handles like its only 25 years old, and not 50. This summer I'll attend to the steering box.

if you want a firmer ride and less "wallowing" in the car, i would buy kyb gas adjust.
if you are taking corners in a spirited way, i would buy maier racing revalved bilsteins.

The Bilsteins are available in three valving configs, "Street, Sport or Race". You can also get them from Street or Track and Shaun over there could give you some sound advice on which valving to go for - send him an email and he'll call you. The Bilsteins are good shocks and worth the xtra $ over the KYBs imho. I'd consider putting them on the back in the same valving you pick for the front too. fwiw Mike Maier has split from Maier racing and opened his own shop - Mike Maier, Inc - a lot of expertise walked out the door at Maier when he left. The stuff Mike is focusing on at the new shop is a little more esoteric and he's been using JRI shocks in his coilover systems for awhile, they have some advantages over the Bilsteins but that's a whole different ani-mule. . . not sure what's going to happen with the old Maier Racing as time goes by, not so likely to see new product development there I would think.
