I'm looking at putting a modified steering column in my 66 289 Mustang that has manual steering. Does anyone know if a 70 Mustang manual steering box with 70 pitman arm and 66 centerlink would work together?

I haven't owned a 65 in years, but I believe the 65 has a female end on the pitman arm, and the 70 has a male end.

Correct and those boxes are kinda on the large size to even try and fit it in a first gen. Along with a different pitman arm the sector shaft is a different size. The better ford box is the Saginaw box some mustangs Torino ranchero's had them. The sags a much better box. If you'd wanna try and put in a new box the two best candidates I've seen is a saginaws smaller cousin the vega box in a manual type it has a 1" sector and same spline/key spacing size it's awesome it is very compact its rated for cars up to around 3,000 lbs if I remember correctly. The other box is a Delphi box which has variants as well is a sag box that has a 1 1/4" sector shaft which is different from early fords they have this box in Durango's jeep xj cj etc although I measured it might interfere with headers unless you box in the frame and. Reinforce it. Can't clarify this and I didn't measure for headers. If some people could measure their headers that would be awesome. On my car if I remember correctly with oem exhaust manifold it would have about 9"? Of clearance to the exhaust. For the pitman arm youd have to use a gm early styler pitman that is similar style to the early mustang. I believe it has the same taper and the ford centerlink. Also another thing I've seen done in a falcon as well as tri five c@$?y's they use the stock sector so they can use the same pitman and customize the top of it as well as the teeth on it and make it so it looks like the Saginaw 800's and then they cut off the bottom of the oe box and weld it to the bottom of the sag box this will give it the same mounts as stock and keeps the box on top of the frame rail as it was stock and this will make it so you can have the most clearance. Hoses for it are easy as you can make custom ones of get a kit from jegs summit many others. Shaft of I remember correctly it has a 17mm dd if I remember correctly it depends on what the sag box was in. For the steering column you'll need a bearing for it which MustangSteve sells. And you'll need a 17mm I joint that you can get from the donor car you take the box from. Pump the early mustangs pump will work if equipped. The pump has the same mounting as up until early 90s. You can use a newer 5.0 stangs pump even or bronco etc.
Hope this helps you out on your search. I actually was gonna do this mod but I stopped because i needed to measure header room clearance if I didnnt the the custom ended sagbox w/the custom end. If people hear will measure that could help out.

Here you go found the article I wanted
This shows the mod to the oem box. If it was me though i would use a lathe and machine down the sag box and make it so then the Mustangs box end would slip or be a press on rather then weld the casting. Do that or similar you could then mount the oem end on the frame rail as it should be. And then on the 800 make a mounting plate which you'd need 1/2" long steel spacers and and a steel plate then weld that the frame rail. Don't drill holes in frame rail and mount the plate to it this will alter the frame rails strength and make a crush some where ever there's a new hole made not good.

If you are just wanting a "short shaft" type box so you can use a rag joint and put in a tilt column with either factory manual or power steering, probably the easiest way to go would be the flaming river replacement box. Its basically a copy of the early 67 box with the 1" selector shaft.
If you looking for more wild mods or power steering, but want a box, the best option availible is probably the Borgeson conversion, although there are some others.
Theres several "home brew" type box conversions such as the catera box if you are a modifier.
Then there is the rack and pinion conversions.....
