New to forum. Several years ago I got the granada brake parts out of a 78 wagon for my 65 convertible 289 from the local salvage yard for $25 now that i am retired I am doing a complete overhaul of the car. Been to several web sites and many comments on bumpsteer when installed on 65s which has me concerned. I plan on going with Randall's power rack and pinion. My question is with all new poly bushings and the power R&P will bumpsteer be an issue and if so is there a way to correct it. Any help would be appreciated

Hello neighbor!
The bumpsteer issue......from what I've read/heard..the poly bushings help alot. With the R&P..that should help also. Even with ALL the mods available its still gonna steer like"an old car". Better than its EVER steered before(even new) but still.....dealing with 50 year old tech.
To SOLVE the bump steer will require V-8 spindles OR.....a guy in Texas make the Granada spindle with the correct ackerman angle! OR......live with it.I'd do the last option.... unless you're planning on full time everyday driving and/or racing.
At least this will keep your post at the top!!

First I am curious about this 78 Granada WAGON you came across. I was not aware Granadas ever came in that configuration. (which makes your brakes suspect as to what they actually are).
I would not use poly strut rod bushings. I do not care what anyone on any forum tells you, they restrict movement of the strut rods which will ultimately result in a failure of the rod.
There is a fix for the ackerman issue with Granada spindles if you have a very large oxy-acetylene torch. Simply heat the radius arms until they can be bent to the same configuration as the 65/66 V8 Mustang spindles. The arms will have to be bent outward a bit.
Some cars do not have noticeable bumpsteer issues as long as you have V8 steering linkage. It might be worth a try to just put them on and drive it.
I have pointed out issues with the Randall's rack many times in the past. Even at one time posted a picture of a failed rack where the center link broke off. But lots of people use them. Just be aware there may be a better solution and do your research and due diligence.

It won't be a daily driver so I'll just live with it .Ment to post i'm going with power brakes also. Have a 9" 57 rear end which will eventually go in.

Thanks Steve You are right, after looking through my records it was not a wagon I'm suffering from old age memory lapse. Having read so many posts on R&P, granada brakes, use poly don't use--very confusing. What R&P brand would you recommend for what I want to do I have all the new parts for the granada switch that I bought years ago so I hate to not use them. Thanks for your help I have access to a tourch would you recommend putting it all together and seeing if there is bumpsteer if there is then try to bend the radius arm. Is there a pattern available to do this if I need to?

You can easily make a pattern from your old V8 spindles. Just set the position of the tie rod holes so they are the same position as the old spindles. HArd to explain, but pretty easy to do.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
