I told Jean before the car was painted that I though it would look great with a white one...she disagrees but I still think I'm right.

And wide whitewalls. And a Conni kit. And lights in the wheelwells. And, and, and......

Okay, okay...I guess maybe she is right.

I think it's fine. White is a fairly common color for a convertible top and a lot of cars. I had a 66 442 that had a white convertible top.

.... fender skirts, luggage rack, side pipes, rear window louver kit and horse shoe bumperettes:
Besides the connie kit the '67 above also has this "cool" wodden insert on its sides:
ooops, let's not forget illuminated grill horses and....
last but not least opera windows:

You wearing this with that vinyl top will really set it off too.............

Seeing the louvers on the couple reminds me of the time, as a youmg lad of 13, I thought rear window louvers would look good on my first car, a 66 Thunderbird Town Landau. Thankfully I outgrew that before I turned 16.

Okay I'll chime in......( #1) I think the blue it beatiful just the way it is....(#2) The vinyl top theme wouldn't match the cragar wheels, and the car would need whitewalls and hubcaps.... (#3) I think vinyl tops are a corny attempt at making a coupe LOOK like a convertible.... (#4) Vinyl tops have sent more cars to the crusher do to rotted out roofs then hurricane Katrina.... (#5) Resale value! Most people would pass on buying a Mustang with a vinyl top, thus it would be harder to sell and the price would be lower.

OK, I see now I've made a terrible mistake - I thought your car was a convertible and you were laying the white on the convertible frame to check out how it looked, and the reference to vinyl top was some kind of joke.
No. Please don't do that!

My fist 66 was red with a black vinyl top. Must have made an impression. I still like it.

I think light/medium gray top would look sleek as well.

Bob, in case you're still on the fence about this idea... browsing the intertube today and found the following which reminded me of this post... don't know if you automatically become 'swank', suddenly handsome or beautiful with a vinyl top butt (TS&T)... also in the fine print at the bottom there it sez "For an exciting, authentic scale model of the new Ford Mustang, send $1.00 to Ford Offer, Department L, P.O. Box 35, Troy, Michigan. (Offer ends July 31, 1964)". Wonder if Dept. L still exists and how many folks sent in for the model.

A plain-Jane six cylinder HT but the top really gives it some class. I would never add a VT just because of all the know issues that have been well mentioned here. But The color contrast of the convertible or fake convertible top really grabs my eye. Maybe it's due to having been there back in the day.

I enjoyed all the pictures. Thanks!

BB, you could just paint the top white, no vinyl to create rust!!!
