granada rear in a 66 coupe

Hi,  I have done the Granada disks on the front and now want to get 5 lugs on the rear. I have a 1966 coupe with a 74 250 engine with a c4 transmission. The rear end is the original. I have a line on a granada 8 inch rear and wanted to know if there is anything special to be aware of. I know the spring perches match and the width is right but what about the shock plates? The drive shaft I am thinking of using is from the doner 74 maverick that I got the motor from. I think I know how to use the Granada emergency brake cables but is there anything that has surprised you when doing the 8 inch swap?  Thanks.  Scott

Re: granada rear in a 66 coupe

I have a Granada rear end in my 66. The shock plates will need to be replaced with 67 plates, or
slot the axle u-bolt holes. You will need axle u-bolts for a 67 to fit the larger diameter housing. The
drive shaft flange is a standered 8"  u-joint size. The 66 parking brake cables will fit the brakes.

Re: granada rear in a 66 coupe

Ditto what Scott said.  In order to use the 66 e-brake cables with the Granada brakes, you will have to remove the cables from both sets.  The cables have a retainer that spreads out after it is pushed through the hole in the backing plate, and it is very difficult to collapse all the retainer fingers at once to get the retainer out of the backing plate... unless you know the trick.

The trick is to take a 3/8" worm gear hose clamp (like a carb hose clamp) and tighten it around the retainer, leaving just enough of the retainer length exposed to get them started through the hole.  You will need to completely unthread the clamp and then put it around the cable, then rethread it back together.  Tightening the clamp will let the fingers fit through the hole.  Once you get the retainer started through the hole, remove the clamp and the retainer will slide right out.

Thanks for the replys.  And tips. It looks pretty straight forward but I have run into some difficulties with each project on this car and wanted the info you have given me.  Thanks again.  Scott

Re: granada rear in a 66 coupe

Well,  I picked up the Granada rear this weekend.  It didn't come with u bolts to mount to the springs. I can't find them listed at any of the parts houses locally.  Can anyone tell me what size the '79 granada 8 inch rear u bolts are?  Thanks.  Scott

Re: granada rear in a 66 coupe

Just measure the diameter of the axle tubes.  Probably 3".

Re: granada rear in a 66 coupe

FWIW once you figure out what size bolts you need this place is good: www.huskyspring.com. I bought a set of 1/2" custom length from them for $8 a piece with big nuts & heavy washers - they roll 'em in their own shop. Called, talked, ordered and they showed up two days later.
