Thinking towards the future, I saw a OD trans for sale on CL for $300. Claims to be 94K miles. Good price? What else should I be aware of?

Regardless of miles, I would consider any used transmission (most especially from someone I don't know) to be a 'core' transmission. --meaning a transmission that should be gone through/rebuilt.
If you were buying it from a transmission shop, that would be different.
Perspective; if you are $300.00 into a transmission that should be gone through then you're roughly $150 in the hole starting out. I got my '98 4R70W from U-Pull-it in Little Rock for $138.00 (tax included). This included the transmission, block plate, torque converter, wiring harness, dipstick & tube.
However, it's totally up to you to decide how you want to approach whatever transmission you decide on.

Have to agree with UltraSteve, a used trans can be ifffy. However a trans shop can check seals and install a fresh filter fairly inexpensivly. Which will give you more assurance. The 2000 V-6 is the correct model, see if the guy will bargain a bit. The V-6 torque converter will give you a slightly higher stall, though if abused has a tendency to "baloon".
