Water pump questions

Hey guys!  I have some questions about water pumps.  My car overheated and in the process of replacing my thermostat, I noticed that my lower radiator hose was leaking at the water pump.  I removed it and found that some of the outlet was corroded and chipped away.  When I removed the water pump and went looking for a replacement I could not find one locally that did not have the back cover plate.  My car is a 289 v8 with the 4 barrel carb.  The pump that I have taken off is aluminum and does not have the backing plate.  What is the reason for the backing plate and are they interchangeable easily? Should I just order one without a backing plate?  Any advice?  Thanks.

Willis

Re: Water pump questions

Your car must be an early 65 where the timing cover is the rear plate of the pump.  You must use the correct pump.  Early 65 aluminum.  They are available.
The 66 and later pumps had their own backing plate and sealed alot better.  Be sure to use sealer on all threads.  I once tinned some washers with lead solder to keep the adjusting bolt for the alternator from seeping water.

Thanks!  I have a new replacement coming in today.  I will remember to use the sealer on the threads!

Re: Water pump questions

If Im doing a 5.0 swap, and using V belts, can I use the early 65 waterpump?  I want to use an alumn pump instead of cast iron.  I bought a new timng cover w/ dipstick infront, but not sure how to tell if i can use early 65 alum. Pump.

Re: Water pump questions

The timing cover must match the water pump. The early 65 timing cover is unique as it forms the back half of the pump and is subject to corrosion and erosion.

In my opinion not the way to go.

They do make aluminum versions of the 66-69 pumps and the 70-79 pumps. Alot of stock replacement pumps in the aftermarket from oreilly or az are aluminum.

Re: Water pump questions

Thanks Steve.
so does it matter if it is 66-69 OR 70-79?  I know the lower outlet matters, but 66 is opposite of 69 (I think) so what other difference is there for say, mid 70's?

Re: Water pump questions

65-69 pumps had inlet on passenger side.  70 and up have it on the driver side.  On 289/302/351W/5.0 anyway.  In later years the pumps could be had in reverese rotation where they used the flat side of a serpentine belt to drive them.  At some point they changed dimensions as far as thickness.  The pulley offsets changed in 70 as well, so they do not align with the 65-69 pulleys.

Re: Water pump questions

The 67 coupe I own has a 69 302 in it. I'm building a 347 stroker from a 71 block that I got for a little of nothing. Does that mean I have to change radiators if I install the 71 with the inlet of the water pump on the other side?

Re: Water pump questions

I think if you use a 71 w/p then yes the lower outlet is on opposite side.  Bigger question is, can you put a 69 pump on 71 block?? That way you keep the lower hose in the same spot.

Use the 69 302's timing cover, pointer, balancer and pulleys and you can use the 69 water pump with the inlet on the driver side.

The engine block does not care what timing cover goes on it, but the balancer must match the crankshaft balance.  If your 347 uses a 28 ounce balancer, your 69 302 stuff will work fine.  Note timing pointers are on opposite sides between 69 and 70, so balancers are marked differently.
