OLD POWER STEERING Leaks ??? Swap For Conversion???

hi all, me again.......1969 Mustang, fastback, 351W, T5 Heavy Duty Trans and Long Tube Headers.......

Essentially, many years ago I converted her to Power Steering...took the time to sandblast all the metal, bought new tie rod ends and every other smaller bolt on or accessories.  Rebult both the Slave Cylinder and Valve annnnnd bought new lines only to Have the entire system leak since day 1........So, my question is, will THICK TEFLON TAPE work on all my Threated areas, or is it a No Brainer to convert to this!?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/BORGESON-Pwr-Asst-to-Power-Steering-Conversion-Kit-for-68-70-Mustang-289-302-351-/131162979226?fits=Year%3A1969|Make%3AFord&hash=item1e89ec3b9a&vxp=mtr

has anyone done it and if so, what is Meant by "COLLAPSE the steering shaft" ?   I find that a poor use of words to descripe a procedure for any tech and/or do it yourselfer.

whats your thoughts folks?  Im literally sick and tired of the leaking and playful FORD steering -----------lol

many thanks,
Jeff

Re: OLD POWER STEERING Leaks ??? Swap For Conversion???

Teflon tape won't help with flare fittings.
The early cars had a 1 piece steering shaft, and the later cars had a removeable, collapsible steering shaft. All 69s have the collapsible shaft standard, meaning its compatible with the borgeson box.

Re: OLD POWER STEERING Leaks ??? Swap For Conversion???

When the stock system was rebuilt did you replace all of the flare seats in the valve? These tend to get mashed up over the years of R&R and wil be virtually impossible to get to be leak free. Also make sure you use the O/E quality flex hoses between the valve and cylinder. The two of them are not supposed to be bent the same, Scott Drake makes the best ones and most repops will leak. I was lucky to find some NOS for mine.
My O/E PS has been leak free since it was installed 15 years ago using the above criteria.

I did the job on my 68 and I believe the 69 column is similar. To collapse the shaft you simply push the interal shaft back up into the column until it bottoms on the tube. I did it using a wooden hammer handle and just pushed it up. I had to trim the lower 1/2" of the column tube with some snips to get clearance for the upper coupling on the rag joint coupling. The hardest thing to do on the Borgeson conversion was to push the return line on to the nipple on the pump. The supplied line was rubber reinforced with braided steel, so it didn't give very much. I too, have a 351W and I had an issue with the pump pulley lining up with the lower pulley. The bushings supplied by Borgeson (2 different sized ones totaling 2 1/2") were too short by 1/2". I had two 3" bushings made and they lined up perfectly. I am very happy with the mod which I have had for 5 years with no problems.
I did install the full kit - pump and bracket, gearbox, hoses and rag joint.
